  • Question about Resolve scopes

Posted by Teo Rižnar on July 31, 2010 at 8:39 am

    Hello,
I have a question about new Resolve OS X software. Does it have scopes built in? Like Apple Color. I know software based scopes (waveform monitor,…) are not as good as ones you plug in on your output signal that goes in monitor/projector. But still I used software scopes on Apple Color for 3 years now, and it’s OK. You can live with it for some time. Maybe later I would buy hardware based ones. I am asking because from photos and videos on NAB and other shows there were always Black Magics Ultra Scopes attached on Resolve. So for good work with DaVinci I will need to buy some hardware based scopes? And BlackMagics Ultra Scopes are so wired the need another PC attached. I do not understand why is so hard tho make interface and stuff to just output HDMI/DVI from device, not doing it via another PC. It sounds a little crazy you need another computer just for scopes. But I have worked on them and they are great! I admit 🙂

At the demo I saw they had scopes running as a popup window you can open in the DaVinci. One of the things I asked about is whether Resolve supported multiple monitors (so I could shuffle some of those scopes to a 2nd one), but the guy said it couldn’t. That may make built in scopes kind of annoying to use since there doesn’t seem to be a good place for them to live. Anyone have any correction on the multi-monitor issue?

Resolve supported multiple monitors (so I could shuffle some of those scopes to a 2nd one), but the guy said it couldn’t.

What do you mean by that? So it does support two monitors in the same time, but not one at the time and shuffle in between them? Now I have two 24″ cinema displays and I can use one for scopes and another one for Resolve interface? Image preview is on 3rd monitor, JVC. Thanks for infos!

On the Resolve Mac, if you have a dual monitor setup, as long as it is a floating window, you can drag it to the other monitor. The waveform window would be considered a floating window and so is the Render window, which is more like an export window coz that’s where you export your images out to Quicktime or DPX.

From what I’ve seen, the software scopes in Resolve aren’t that great, but if you can live with the scopes in Color you should be fine.

I’ve been using a Tektronix WVR feeding a 17″ JVC HD monitor for the past year and I have to say, it’s much easier on the eyes. Whenever I have to go back to software scopes(besides Scopebox, which is awesome by the way) or stare at a small hardware vectorscope/waveform monitor, it drives me crazy.

Pocket Ultrascope does not need PC? It works without computer and you can just plug it in between SDI link to monitor? Or does it need computer in the same way as Ultrascope, it just works via USB 3.0 insted of PCI?

The pocket ultrascope still requires a computer, it just interfaces via USB3. I think it was designed so you can turn a laptop into your scope monitor.

[Vladimir Kucherov] “it just interfaces via USB3.”

So which Blackmagic/Resolve-qualified Mac computer has USB3?

    Just to be devilish!

Mac Pro/MacBook Pro with $20 USB3 PCIe Card and Bootcamp???

Joking… Apple are fools for not offering USB3 iPads, with Twitter connectivity so you can Tweet your current IRE in realtime!

Correct me if I am wrong, but you can not run ultracsopes in win and resolve in os x on same workstation at the same time. For ultrascopes you need another computer and it displays instruments via software/graphics card in that cumputer.

Now I always thought Ultrascope was meant to run on its own PC – so i’m guessing this guy would run just fine on any USB3 pc laptop that meets the system spec.

You know the blackmagic guys give a lot of love to Windows with driver and device support. I wonder if the reason for no PC davinci is because it’s easier to port code Linux > Mac rather than Linux > Windows?
