How did you end up sending it back to Media Composer?

I don’t have the DNxHD license. I’m curious to hear if Resolve can render out to a “Avid MediaFiles” or MXF directory that Avid understands.

You may have already tried this, but I’ll throw it out anyway.

    – Render out of Resolve in DNxHD MXF in source mode

    – In your original “Avid MediaFiles” directory, put an x in front of the name to stop it from loading the media

    – boot up MC add your new MXF files to the new Avid MediaFiles directory

    – decompose your sequence with handles less than or equal to what you sent to Resolve

    – relink your sequence to the new media

I mainly work in flattened files, so this is all theoretical. Let us know how it turns out for you.

How was your original source material brought in? AMA or captured? Do you need handles? You could export one DNxHD file from resolve. Then, apply the pan and scan effect to it, select all tracks and click the “subdivide” button in the effect. That should put all the cuts back into your flattened file.

I think it’s important to note that running a color session is more than just grading. It’s managing client expectations, listening and performing. Someone with very little experience will not instill this confidence. Reputation and experience also go a long way and I believe that, more than software knowledge, this what a client is paying for. True, there is a name recognition with certain systems. However, in the end, the work speaks for itself. In my experience, most clients don’t give a f what you’re working with as long as they leave happy. Now I have to pull out my laptop and start a session…. (just kidding 😉

Word on the street (or Twitter) is that Blackmagic will be releasing something on Monday. No proof or hard facts, just what I’ve heard. I’ll be keeping a close eye on the website Monday morning 🙂

That’s a bummer, but at least you have an answer. Hopefully, that issue will be resolved in the next software rev (sorry for the pun 😉

This might work. It’s a bit convoluted, untested and completely theoretical. It’s based on a Canon DSLR workflow. They also have an issue with their timecodes starting at the same point. That said, some of this info could be used to further your cause. Here we go…

You’ll need access to these apps as well:

    Avid Log Exchange (avid.com)
    qtChange (videotoolshed.com)

In FCP, make sure you’re in the root level of your project and select File -> Export -> Batch List

Open up Avid Log Exchange and use these settings (change whatever to suit your purposes) and hit CONVERT:

    Open up qtChange:

    1. Pick your source folder
    2. Select your ALE
    3. Alter all your clips

Your clips will all (should) reflect the associated timecode from FCP.

WARNING! This will permanently alter the timecode on all of your master clips. Be careful!

I’m not sure if this is the best/cleanest/smartest way to do it, but it was the first answer that came to me.

Let us all know how it turned out or if you found a better way.

I have not purchased the xKeys controller. I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t work since it’s using the same “Universal Access” that many other programs use. However, you’re limited to items that are mapped to the keyboard. There have been some posts that note some DaVinci panel only keys, so you couldn’t use those.

Upon investigating it further, I noticed there wasn’t too much difference in price between the two key surfaces.

    Novation (64 buttons) $150
    Quickeys (software) $60
    Automap (software) $30

    Total
    $240

    xkeys (wSoftware) 58 keys

    $190

There’s not a massive difference in price, but you get 6 more keys with the Novation. $8.33 a key? 😉

Novation does seem a bit “sexier” if you have clients in your room. Some might be a little distracted by the lights anyway and opt to turn them off.

Personally, I’ve gravitated to a Magic Trackpad and BetterTouchTool ($70 + batteries)

BetterTouchTool allows you to map gestures to keystrokes. For instance, I have 3 finger swipe down mapped to all nodes off and 3 finger swipe up mapped to all nodes on. The trackpad takes up very little space and I find it useful to quickly modify windows and shapes rather than jumping through the menus on the wave. It takes time to get used to and remember all of your gestures, but when you have it down, you can be very fast.

It’s all a matter of preference. I’m sure others will prefer physical keys. Others that have used a tablet before may feel more at home.

What version of Media Composer are you on? There\\\’s a significant change that happened around the release of 5.0.3.7 concerning AAF exports. Here\\\’s some details:

    https://lfhd.net/2011/03/21/avid-5-5-ama-exporting-aaf-now-works/

Have you tried exporting a linked AAF file and, in Resolve, add all the associated R3D files to the media pool? Then in the conform tab add the AAF?

    Hope this helps,
