My first question would be totally unrelated to AE. During the two months you weren’t on your computer, was someone else using it? The first thing I would do is a virus scan, maybe a registry clean (Eusing Free Registry Cleaner is great – I’ve used it for years), and maybe a defrag. Another thought is possibly a bad memory stick, or a hard drive problem. You don’t say whether you’re on a Mac or PC, so I can’t get more specific than that. It just doesn’t seem likely that something in AE would break while you weren’t using it.

I think it may be an issue with whether the microphones you’re trying to use are high impedance or how impedance. What sort of connectors are on the ends of the cables? If the mic cables have an XLR barrel connector, they’re probably low impedance. If the mics have a TSR 3.5mm connector on them, I’m guessing that they’re high impedance, but there also may be a need for phantom power to boost the signal to line level. Sorry I didn’t explain that – no such plugin – it’s going to be all hand work. By Vector, I meant that you would create the ribbons in a Vector program such as Illustrator – you could also get away with doing it in Photoshop with a bit more work.

I generally have very good luck using Type on a Path. It’s a simple matter to choose the typeface which gives you the dot shape you want (square or round, generally), then just type a bunch of Periods. You can then select and space them however you want, and then animate them along the path if need be (I couldn’t get at your example). Here’s a rundown of text on a path, in case you’re not familiar with it:
This has always been the simplest solution for me, and it gives me a huge degree of control.
