    No, actually Sascha is reporting the same issue — that he could see three under OS 10.9 but only a maximum of two under 10.10.

    This is a chicken-and-egg problem with the more advanced nVidia cards (especially un-flashed non-native Mac-approved hardware). We could run several cards up to and including Mountain LIon, but they had to be Mac-compatible — I had three flashed GTXs plus a Q4000 running in one system under Mountain Lion, but wanted to jump up to the Titans for many more CUDA cores — but, you have to move forward into Mavericks/Yosemite for the system to see them, but Apple in their non-finite wisdom cut the maximum number of recognized processors to a maximum of two of those type.

    Its still worth doing, but the MacPro chassis itself has to be at least a 5,1. This tiot never ends.

    It has a 2 nVIDIA GPU limit, otherwise more AMD/ATI GPUs are supported. I have a twin Titan Black GPU array running in a Cubix Xpander with an ATI5770 running as UI in the mainframe. Very important that all drivers and CUDA versions are up to date. At the moment I am refraining from doing any updates whatsoever to my Yosemite system as it appears that Apple is trying to break the use of nVidia hardware — and getting very tired of waiting 24-36-48 hours for the latest fix to the fix to the fix to something that should never have been broken.

    GPU/CPU performance with respect to “certified” performance for the level you are attempting is going to involve more than just the workstation+internal peripherals as you are going to be moving a mountain of data and media storage might eventually become a bigger concern. Do you intend to work at Full Resolution Premium, and in that case, what will you be using for a display?

    That can cover a lot of territory and the second respondent’s followup question is relevant —

    Would it make sense to export a fully uncompressed 10 or 12-bit full-RGB dpx sequence if your origination was some 8-bit Long-GOP acquisition codec? Because the damage has already been done, and shipping a muffin in an oil tanker won’t improve the situation. One of the in-between codecs like ProRes (out of this equation because of Vegas/Sony/Windows) or DnXHD would be a good choice.

    Are you trying to work in a linear or log mode with footage that has been converted in some way?

    each node can be set up to behave differently: I set up a unque first node in the process tree, right-click on that node and a conversion dialog will be part of the options. Shut off the individually checkmarked process applied to luminance, so that any applied filter, whether blur, sharpening, or whatever will only affect the chroma channels, leaving the luminance channel unchanged. this is an old trick usually applied to improve chroma keying.

    working with HQ in “online” won’t make any qualitative difference, conveting the C300 to an intra codec may help with other processes, though.

    For 1080P 8-bit, probably. Plain vanilla ProRes 422 is still a 10-bit container and will be just fine.

    If you use any tricks to try to improve the chromaticity resolution, I would render the graded media in HQ, though. Something you can try is to “smooth” the U/V vectors with a little blur in a node swapped to YUV mode.

  • In a number of ways, the old adage that you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t force it to drink might have some application here.

    Under what circumstances does the project now “look great?”

    If the finished project has never been technically evaluated, it cannot be accepted for broadcast. That has to be done under controlled conditions and there are legal requirements. Its an FCC thing, and that just covers the values that you might intend to transmit over the public airwaves. Whether those are good or not, or will be reproduced as intended depends on conforming with a standard set of values defined by a number of international regulatory bodies — SMPTE, CCIR, IBC… the intention is to try to set up a transmission pipeline where a set of numerical values is translated in consumers’ homes, which are utterly chaotic, so you really need to start out at least somewhere in the ballpark. Perfectly in conformance would be best… and that is a challenging thing to do. Not all displays are equal — that takes some deliberate intervention to achieve, and there are a number of manufacturers that have devoted a ton of effort and investment to try to provide. That is the difference between a grade-qualified display and any old thing you can pick up at Costco.

    If you can’t say exactly where your black levels are sitting… you don’t know. They’re not “okay.” They will likely be wrong, its not something that can be determined by eye… and a QA will reveal that instantly — then it will start getting expensive to fix. Its better to be right, out of the gate, and defend-ably so.
