    [John Treffer]
My question: Is there a way to reconnect this edit to the original MXF camera files?

Yes, there is. A couple of ways in case one of them doesn’t function as expected.

User Manual Reference: Read the section on Importing Projects Relinking Media.

Specifically, “Automatically Import” and “Link to source camera files” is the normal path if the naming conventions have been preserved through the editing process. It might be a little more challenging if this workflow has not been adhered to.

If the filename, TC and/or Reel numbers don’t synchronize, then you may be into a force-offline, import media, hope for the best / force conform scenario.

More Info is contained in the sections titled “Conforming XML and AAF Files.”

It should work more simply than it sounds, but knowing how it works will enable you to troubleshoot the links if it doesn’t.

Whenever I get into a situation similar to that, if I have a layer available, I’ll pull the clip up one, make the speed adjustments and then drop it down into its original location. There should be a checkbox in the speed adjustment dialogue to defeat rippling the timeline.

    Any idea?”

How many time code tracks does this format support? Is there a chance you are looking at “absolute” vs. “camera” or something like that?

Its early. The tech show is just about to open, so there will be a flood of breathless, this-changes-everything, you have to go buy all new software, hardware, learn a new language, change your gender…

When does the fatigue set in? Oh… global recession, maybe.

If your Titans are identical, you should try boosting your CUDA count by sharing the GPU load with the GUI card. There are other issues with the interface, though — used to be slowdowns if you were in certain grade window. Curves and power windows were once notorious for slowing down the playback rate. Make doubly certain your display settings match the timeline.

Some users report time code discrepanices with RED footage because there are several time code streams associated with that format(Camera, Absolute and Edge), “Use Camera code” for example might fix this and re-mport the source footage.

This question is asked from time to time and the usual culprit is that these non-commercial capture applications use a non-standard, variable frame rate. You may be able to open your captures in something like iMovie or similar, and export a QT movie at a fixed frame rate like 23.98 or 29.97. Most mobile devices also employ this strategy for its advantage in file-size management — in many ways its fine if all you want to do is capture — but if you want to proceed with some kind of post-production, then you have to follow their path and find apps that support non-constant framerates.

  • PS, I cannot open the “.dpx” files with any application — Even *Switch* can’t find a picture.

  • By themselves, the .dpx files seem to simply be images, and I think its the .drx files that may contain the grade, but I am not inside the application at that level. I was hoping to find a path through a still import if I could find the Library folder where grade/reference stills normally reside. In a normal system, these files are also described as XML entities. You can drill down to them in your system browser. If you are sort of able to restore the stills in an operating project, I might try to export a .drp — in this case, the missing link that leaves the export and .drx reference “empty” might be the broken offline media link.

    Nasty little surprise.
