Forgive me, but…

when I count the buttons and knobs, I see that “Element” can boast about maybe 9 more than Wave…
so I’m sort of failing to appreciate the excitement.

Especially when both sides will assign the task of mapping the device to each other, and we will have the same situation as the wildly-more-solid 200-series panels.

Loading an AAF is similar to loading an XML, and it is accomplished in the “Conform” dialog, using the “Load” command, and then you browse to the AAF in response to the application’s request to “Choose a file to Import”. If that AAF isn’t recognized by the browser, there is likely a problem with the export from AVID. You will also be directed by the browser to point the loader to the media that you should have established as part of the DaVinci database, and the source footage will also be loaded to the Media Pool.

The operation is covered in detail in the manual starting about page 130 or so.

Successful AAF round trips between systems usually involves a consolidated export, transcoded to something like the MXF-wrapped DNxHD codec. Quicktime DNxHD is not supported by Resolve at this time.

I know there are fake “DF” modes for non-2997 frame rates, it seems peculiar that the mismatch is being assigned.

Yes, there is a Log-to-Lin in the right-click LUT selection dialog that you can attach on a node-by-node basis, and of course the usual global LUT options also exist. The one that comes up for me seems to be tailored to the Alexa, though, and even though the manual mentions Canon, I can’t find any other references to linearizing Canon’s Log approach. I’m wary, as well, of the ARRI transform, since everybody seems to have their own secret sauce, and I’m framing the opinion based on an early experience with PanaLog, which in practice seemed to slide up and down the exposure scale in amazingly creative ways. Yeah, maybe that’s a politic way of expressing it.

As a “neg test” for an upcoming project, I’ve requested some charts — MacBeth or EIA grey scale exposed up and down a couple of stops, because I’m at least as interested as any film cinematographer in seeing how the pixels crawl up and down the roller coaster.

Depending on the level of your school program, I see speed requirements (read: expectations) and abuse as two of the external factors that may affect your choices. If you really don’t need Noise Reduction, or more than one GPU as image processor, then the free Lite version won’t be carrying the additional complication of a license dongle that will have to be secured somehow.

Can’t speak to Lion as an Operating System as I get apoplectic about it.

The PNY Q4000 is fine, its licensed and approved and everything, but its the slowest CUDA card you can buy. See other threads in this forum for opinions on alternatives and how to procure them. BTW, it would NOT be used as a display card if you expect any performance… you really should have two GPUs — the Slot One card is the GUI, and you do not attach any monitors to the Slot2 card. Your actual “display” card is the Blackmagic Decklink feeding the SDI inputs of the Flanders monitor. You might also want a second graphics monitor to slide supplementary data windows, like the “scopes”, off the main GUI.

Menus available on the Tangent Wave have expanded quite a bit since the first Mac Resolve offering. I think its something like 13 pages deep, now. There is a pdf in the Blackmagic Support partition.
How portable (vulnerable to disappearance) and resistant to damage, spilled soft drinks, lattes, corn chips in the joyballs…. I don’t know. Those things aren’t allowed here.
