I’m not sure about Streamclip: I just worked on a project where they wanted ProRes but as of the end of November there was no way of encoding it in a Windows environment.
It seems that as other NLEs come out and gain market share, Apple does the obvious to retain business: develop an assload of proprietary formats that you can only use on their systems.

December 12, 2009 at 8:02 am in reply to: What is going on with Adobe Media Encoder (CS4)?!?!Actually, scratch what I said previously: it’s now rendering almost in real-time with that unchecked. I also just virus scanned, defragmented, and closed a bunch of BG processes (down to 40 from 48).
It can’t be xml info that’s slowing me down that much, can it? But I also find it a bit difficult to imagine that simply defragmenting and closing a couple non-intensive processes could yield this manner of improvement.
Any ideas?

I’d imagine it’s a codec issue.
What’s your system specs and what the codec info on the clips/photos in question? I’ve had some serious issues with format compatibilities in the past.
Also, why are you using Streamclip on photos? Premiere can import most photos and can also natively import .psds. Why not try either importing the photos unaltered or passing them through Photoshop and saving as .psd?

Draft settings will help, but I’d still recommend a better rig or program for HD editing with your specs: while you might be able to achieve decent playback with unaltered footage, you will slow to a crawl if you do any effects work. Also, I’d be wary of render times: since migrating all of the export functions to Adobe Media Encoder, I’ve been dealing with significant issues regarding export functionality.
Are you on Windows 7/Vista or XP? Apparently CS4 is optimized for a 64 bit OS, but I can’t speak to that personally.

Is AME optimized for single-core processors? I can’t fathom why it would run faster on a single-core, single processor rather than a two-core, dual processor set-up. My chipset is a bit old, but not any older than the M4 plus the added RAM should make it go faster, no?

If you have AE, I believe there’s a timestamp effect: I know it’s not as hands-off as you were probably looking for, but setting 4-6 digits per clip isn’t too strenuous.

Laying off to tape is probably the best way considering your stipulations. I’ve found a work-around with some of my clients by using the Avid DnxHD codec for QT which is comparable to ProRes (and also free and non-proprietary), but assuming you need a full-res copy of the project and that it’s not simply being transcoded in the end to SD DVD, to tape is probably the best solution.

I would recommend against Premiere–especially if the idea is to edit HD–with those specs. As your projected system is almost what I’m running, I can say that HD editing will be atrocious–I’d suggest trying out CS3 (I never edited HD with it but I do know that the RAM overhead is much more manageable if it has the capability to actually handle the footage, of which I’m unsure) or (shudder) getting Avid Media Composer through whatever sources you can, since Avid is the only reliable HD editor I’ve come across with our similar specs.

First thing I’d suggest checking is whether or not the AME process is running: I’ve had many times where I thought AME wasn’t opening, but for one reason or another the process was still active (in my case, probably from an earlier crash) which prevented the app proper from opening. Let me know what’s the case in that regard.

What precisely is the issue? I’ve had tons of weird things crop up since migrating to CS4, so specifics would be helpful.
