May 26, 2014 at 11:06 am in reply to: The many instances where my Vegas 12 Pro crashes.Hi Steve,
You helped me greatly before, so I hope you’ll forgive me if I turn to you for this.
I have used resmon, as you suggested before, but Vegas is not listed as “not responding”. The message says it is waiting for a respons. No idea what respons that might be. Vegas doesn’t ask for any, as this happens during rendering. I never get to the end of the project, so I never get a complete video file, because of this problem.
I have learned from you to be sure and delete unused events from the media bin, and I tried it with and without GPU. Nothing works.
I have re-installed Vegas several times, before and after updating Windows or even re-installing that. So I’ve come to the end of the solutions that worked previously.I would greatly appreciate any help.
Thanks.J.J.

May 23, 2014 at 7:55 pm in reply to: Vegas playback problems in preview screenI have the same problem. It happened when I put text over the image. The text was fine but the video image started to go wrong.
I now have gone so far as to re-install Windows and all software, including of course SVP12, but it’s still there. I tried removing the text, which seemed to fix the preview. But now it won’t render. So I’m even lost further than I already was. This fluttering not only happened when I put text over video, but also when I had added an event effect. Removing the media from the project and re-inserting it, did help for the moment. But after a fresh start, it could be back again.
I do hope someone has the answer. I have to deliver video’s very soon but I can’t render them in any usable way. Yes, the flutter does get into the rendered video as well !!!

I updated Windows (7), re-installed Vegas before and after that, but still, with whatever format I use, when I put a color match effect on it, it ultimately goes wrong.
The effect is visible at first. But when I copy it to put somewhere else on the timeline, the image is black. When I delete the effect and put it on the event again using a saved preset, the image stays black. In fact, in the video fx window, when the presets for color match are shown, it is already visible that the affected image will be black.
The source image is still on the timeline, and the effect does work on the event where it first sits. But after moving it, or after restarting Vegas, chances are the screen just goes black. -
It’s AVCHD that takes up most of the events on the timeline, and is the format that I am experiencing this with. It’s a mix, however. There’s also some HDV (1440) in the project.
Maybe it has nothing to do with it, but in properties I selected 50i because there’s no 25p available, which is what I have been recording in, according to my A37. What came out of the video camera’s is 50i, so I thought this would be okay, and better than selecting 24p.
I have not reinstalled Vegas lately. I did that in november and have not used it every week since. Is that something you should do more regularly than once a year?

Hi Steve,
I want to thank you for all your excellent advice. You really pulled me through here, I’m not kidding. I got depressed because of all the hangs and crashes of my system and was afraid to accept new assignments becasue I couldn’t get the results out. But you kept on coming with sound advice and answered all my questions. I cannot thank you enough.
The system works! Keeping your OS in tune, obviously payes off. I just finished three video’s which all rendered several times without a hitch. I accepted an assignment I wanted. Things are looking up.
You’re my hero. Keep up the good work.
With great regard, Joost

Now I’ve removed all non-used media from the project media list. I checked all drivers; the were all reported as the newest and without problems. What did make a difference, was updating Windows. It took several hours and about six restarts, but it should be fine now and rendering appears to go without a glitch. FINALLY!
Thanks very much for all your help and persistend answers. I needed that.BUT
I play the rendered file in Windows Media Player and for the first time it doesn’t play smoothly. Sound stutters and image seems to lag a bit occasionally. This is on a system with 16Gb DDR3 RAM and an i7 processor with no other software opened but what Windows does itself.
And the size of the file: is a 10 minute video at 720p supposed to be around 57Gb worth? I’ve never had such huge file sizes before. Size is just a litte less (56Gb) for avi widescreen DV. Previously I had file sizes of well under 5Gb for those 10 minutes.
So is the stutter memory paging and is the file simply too big? How do I get 720p quality in a smaller size?

I have deleted unused media from the project media bin, which made a big difference. On first startup I can’t even see a flash anymore. Great. Never thought this would make such a big difference.
Reinstallation made rendering seem to go much faster. But it also crashes earlier. And before I deleted the unused media, the time the screen went white was longer. Still haven’t been able to complete a render which was faultless.
Strange things happened on the timeline. Like when the image in the preview window is different from what it should be looking at the timeline. Specifically: there is no more video at that point on the timeline but there is still image in preview, as it should. Restarting solved that problem though.
Also track motion gave me some trouble, but this is probably unrelated. On several points I move a videotrack to follow a frame. Using pan/crop and the cookie cutter this works fine. Using track motion and the cookie cutter it doesn’t move in sync and I need several keyframes to adjust. Setting on all keyframes is linear. But in track motion it looks more like smooth.
I’ll try to hook up the editing computer to the internet. For this I need to move the router or buy additional hardware like a home plug or something. I’ll get back on that issue.
Thanks so far. You’re super!

I removed Vegas the regular way and re-installed it. It seems worse than before. I got the message to open an auto saved project, which I did. What was visible on the timeline did not fully coincide with what was visible in the preview window, which was what should have been on the timeline.
After the render completed, the problem manager came up and ended Vegas. On startup Vegas goes red in resmon several times stating is doesn’t react. It comes back on again after a few second though and I can start working.
What does seem to have improved, is the render speed. Before the re-installation a render of my project was supposed to take around half an hour, if it ever completed. Now it takes about 7 minutes and did seem to complete. For that kind of performance I had to prerender the intire project the last time.A fresh version of Vegas does not solve the problem. What part of Windows controls IO-operations? Could that have anything to do with it?
