Coming in via firewire from a DV deck at 1:1 does nothing except give you big files. Digitize at DV25 and you’ll get the same quality.

Adrenaline (and Mojo) is the hardware. Media Composer is the software. Avid XPress Pro uses a stripped down version of Media Composer (4 multicam vs 9, no animatte, etc.). I don’t know about the high-end stuff (Avid DS), but once you master Media Compsoser, you’ll be able to get around most Avid products very easily.

First guess – check your audio settings. Your CD, sampled at 44.1k, was brought into the Avid at 48k, which is the default audio setting. Check your ‘audio settings’ in the settings tab, and set your project to 44.1. You’ll have to transcode your audio back to 48k to get it back to DVD.
Second guess – It might have something to do with your frame rate as well – aren’t 30p and 30i different rates? It’s too early to remember that.

Slap a picture in picture on your clip (in the sequence), and adjust to your hearts content. You’ll have to adjust the scale and lose a little quality, but it’s better than nothing.

You can ‘stack’ up to 24 video (XPress Pro) and a whole bunch (I’m really not sure – 99?) of audio tracks. Media Composer will do more video.

I think what you are asking is how to save an effect, no?
If you want to to save the parameters of your effect, you can drag the FX icon from the top right of the effect editor window into your bin. Holding the option key (assuming you are on a Mac) will copy the effect without bringing the media with it (or it could be the command key – my mac seat time is limited these days).
Is that what you wanted to know?

If it’s a large company like B&H, it’s a pretty safe bet they are buying in volume. I’ve never had a problem with them, but I’ve never expected any customer support (as opposed to customer service), either. Do a little research on the company. See what others are saying about thier policies. Be on the lookout for grey-market cameras as well. These are cameras not intended for the US market, and you may have problems getting it repaired.
