Although Avid can import a wide variety of formats now, I still go with a .png sized appropriately for your system.
Of course you know to stay away from small lines and oversaturated colors….

Aacom (since deceased) had something, I think called Editware. I also seem to remember the CMX line evolved (or spun off) something as well, but I don’t remember what.

If you are going to ver12 on OS X (10.2.6), you will have more options in terms of customizing your settings. You’ll lose marquee (at least I don’t have it on my system), but CC is the same. My Meridian OSX system is a tad flakey (it’ll crash with absolutely no warning), but overall, I think you’ll like it. In other words, no major differences I can think of…

As long as your video is legal, and the content is compelling, you should have no problems!

You know, I’ve never had a TC issue I’ve not been able to resolve. I think because we generate our own footage, and very rarely rely on outside sources. We’ve been a DF facility since 1997, and we don’t use much shot before then. Therefore, I fully support your statement…

Chaz is exactly right. Another way to get around this (especially if you are logging your own tapes, and your tapes haven’t been logged somewhere else) is to make sure your tape is in the deck, and you’ve rolled it forward for about 5 seconds. Also, try inserting your tape and THEN opening the digitize tool. If you still get the error (and you haven’t logged anything off of this tape), eject it, pop it back in and rename it. This will only work for a tape you havn’t logged shots from. Make sure your settings reflect your TC of choice. Look in settings > capture menu – you can set it there.
FYI, drop frame is considered broadcast, or real-time TC. You’ll also see it referred to as 29.97. Through a complicated formula involving the rising of the moon and how many times a cat licks it’s whiskers (not really, but I can never remember how it works), it actually ‘drops’ a frame every (I think) minute of video (the video is still there, the TC isn’t – I told you it was complicated!) This was developed because in non-drop frame, for every hour of video you actually had 1 hour and 1 minute (I think) of real time video – imagine trying to set your broadcast scedule and sell ads like this!

What I was TRYING to say at 0500MST was I do not believe a degree is worthless. I believe a degree shows a willingness to commit to a career path. HOWEVER, I don’t think I’d hire a prima donna with a degree over someone without a degree who has a really good personality. This buisness is stressful enough without having to deal with, shall we say, not nice people….

My humble opinion?
A monkey can work in video production.
I hire people that can get along with the client and my crew. I would say your degree is NOT worthless. It’s probably more that 75% of the people that work in video….
