I would hope you got an answer from somewhere as your post hasn’t been answered for quite some time. The answer is “no” USB 3.0 just doesn’t have the current to spin up a 3.5″ hard drive.

You simulated a drive failure by pulling a drive, so it’s doing exactly what it indicates, “Rebuilding…Pri => Sec” rebuilding the Primary drive onto the secondary. See what happens when it finishes rebuilding because it’s too late now to do anything else. I would hope that you have your data backed up somewhere else also…..

Those drives you mentioned: H3IKNAS40003272SN must be older stock, drives. The reason I say this is that Ultrastar is now branded “Western Digital”, after Hitachi sold their hdd division. “Deskstar” drives are now Toshiba branded.
