    Michael,

The bottom line between the 2 RAID products is data security. The Stardom SOHORAID SR5 with RAID 6 is the best fault tolerant product for your workflow. There’s an LCD for RAID management and a wider variety of RAID levels over the SR4. You’re welcome to call to talk to us more if you’d like.

    Hey Michael,

We crunched the numbers here & with FW 800 & needing a decent amount of capacity, you might want to consider our SR5 which has RAID 6, protection in the event that 2 drives fail. SOHORAID SR5 & Alex at DV411 can hook you up.

June 2, 2011 at 4:35 pm in reply to: Questions about Raid, firewire, and storage

    Romeo,

I’ve noticed that nobody has addressed your post yet, so I figured I would do what I could to help.

You asked: Is there a speed benefit with using raid0, specifically a g-raid, connected with firewire over a single external drive connected with firewire. It seems like from performance notes on raids and single drives that one only gets speed benefits with using a raid with eSATA. I have an 2010 iMac, and if what I write is correct, then getting something like a g-raid would not be anymore beneficial than getting another regular external HD since I am not able to use eSATA.

Answer: Yes, there is a benefit with FireWire in sustained performance across the 2 drives, as opposed to a single drive, (which the performance of the drive is not nearly as sustained) and you’ll obviously have a larger working capacity than with a single drive. Do bear in mind though that in RAID 0 if a drive fails, you have no protection and you’ll lose the array if a drive fails.

You also asked: I currently have one 1TB Lacie d2 Quadra which I’m using as a scratch disc for FCP. It is now 90% full. I am looking for more storage and also to back up all my stuff (internal and external). I was thinking maybe another 1TBish firewire drive for scratch and then a cheap high capacity usb drive to back up all the drives

Answer: You could certainly do what you want to do, or you could go with a 2 bay RAID 1 product like the STARDOM SR2 that has RAID 1 mirroring, so your data is always backed up on the 2nd drive automatically: https://www.stardom-usa.com/product_list.php?sno=0000137 although RAID 1 is slower than RAID 0 you do have automatic back-up of your data, with protection if one of the 2 drives fail.

    Hope this helps.

    Susanto,

Have you tried taking the same footage back to your FireWire storage & playing it back?

Can you send us a project file?
email sales@raidon-usa.com & we’ll see what that can tell us.

In addition, take a look at the following information and video, both which address your issue.

    Susanto,

A suggestion before you throw in the towel is to contact Areca again to see if they have a solve for you. I’ve not heard of the issue you’re experiencing with the ATTO R680 card which what we’ve validated for use with our ST8-U5 product. That being said, we don’t believe the problem is with our enclosure but with your card.

  • You mentioned FCP & USB 3.0 in your post. At this time there is no support of USB 3.0 on the Mac except with some LaCie products, again with USB 3.0

On the STARDOM Storage side of RAIDON business, we have a 4 bay mini-SAS connected product, the ST5610-4S-U5 that will work great with a number of RAID controller cards on the Mac end, one of those cards being the ATTO R680 card, which while not cheap, will give great performance on a Mac. There are other options on RAID controller cards that will give you great throughput at a lesser cost, do some price comparison.

    Sorry for the confusion.

  • Hey Steve,

RAIDON has this product: https://www.raidon-usa.com/product_detail.php?product_name=GR3630-SB3&p_id=61 or we have a 4 bay external product on that same site: http://www.raidon-usa.com
it can be purchased now on https://www.newegg.com

RAID 0, RAID 1 with USB 3.0 & eSATA. Internal power supply, RAID level configuration on the LCD front panel, all perks that content creation professionals like.

Note: The only reliable USB 3.0 product for Mac is from LaCie at present.

    Santo,

Sorry for the delay in replying to your post. What kind of RAID card and the memory on the card are you using with the ST8-U5 SOHOTANK? You might want to check to see that you have the latest updated drivers for the RAID card you have.

How fast is the render speed as opposed to the solution that you indicated that you used previously?
