    Hi guys,

So I just recently upgraded my storage system to stardom st8 MINI-SAS with 8 x 3tb hitachi drives raid 6

Its super fast compared to my previous esata raid5 drive and I can’t be happier

until… I drop a text edit in to add a simple text… it drop frames when i play over the text. After I render “full” then it can play nicely, but it should’t render such a simple text right? I never have this problem even editing using usb2!

Furthermore, After it goes through the text layer and drop frame, it slows down the whole timeline. I can no longer can play it nicely without restarting FCP…

    Please help

I’m using latest fcp with snow leopard on a macpro 8core

    Thanks

    Santo

    Santo,

Sorry for the delay in replying to your post. What kind of RAID card and the memory on the card are you using with the ST8-U5 SOHOTANK? You might want to check to see that you have the latest updated drivers for the RAID card you have.

How fast is the render speed as opposed to the solution that you indicated that you used previously?

What format of footage are you editing with? Codec?

What are your RT settings set to? Safe or Unlimited? Should be UNLIMITED.

    Hi Jonathan, thanks for replying

My raid card is areca ARC-1222X.

How do I check if I got the latest firmware? I installed this one here:

    ArcMSR-1.3.2.universal.10.6.10A432.dmg

    install_mraid.zip

THe render speed of the sohotank is definitely a lot faster than the normal raid esata drive that i used previously. But the sohotank fails to render a simple text layer.. and after that, it starts to slow the whole thing down until the point I have to restart fcp and avoid playing the timeline through a text layer

thanks in advance for your help

    Hi Shane,

    Thanks for replying

    I’m editing AIC codec footage.

My RT settings are set to unlimited and I’ve tried safe as well. didn’t make a difference.

    Thanks

Old drivers are the source of your problem. You’ve got to check this stuff whenever installing new hardware. See the link below:

    thanks so much.

Obviously I’m not very savvy in this kind of stuff.. very very bad actually. I just copy the links that my seller gave me and not checking it myself whether its the latest one.

Do I need to erase my previous driver or do I just carry on and install this new one that you gave me?

    Thanks again

Most controllers do have an uninstall routine, but I’m not certain about Areca.

There should be a document packaged with the new drivers, or a manual on the Areca site. You’d best check before proceeding.

I have reinstalled the driver, but the problem is still there. its just “a little bit” better.

I contacted my seller and he sent me this link:
    ftp://ftp.areca.com.tw/RaidCards/AP_Drivers/MacOS/DRIVER/SnowLeopard/V133_20100627/

but the file is corrupted.. so he is now getting areca to fix the file first…

Will post here once I can install this driver.

AIC is a lossy legacy codec, superseded by vastly superior codecs like ProRes422 which has much better RT performance and is not lossy. It also renders faster.

    Hi Michael,

Thanks for letting me know. I started using AIC because of doing same day edits and I needed to transcode my 5d mark ii footage onto an editable format. I did some tests and prores transcoded a lot longer than AIC does so thats why I chose AIC.

I also couldn’t tell the difference in terms of image quality between the two. However I didn’t know much about the RT performance. I’m now considering going back to prores… would you recommend proresLT?
