    Jack,

From what I understand, SAS hard drive are nearly 3X as fast as SATA drives.

    Jack,

The SAS drives are going to give you the better performance. With that concept in mind, you wouldn’t want to mix the 2 kinds of drives in an array.

May 1, 2012 at 4:31 pm in reply to: RAID drives

    Alex,

I was waiting to see if anyone else would respond & since they didn’t…

Bottom line: You aren’t going to be able to “split up” the RAID set & then use each drive as it’s own.

Generally with any RAID, once it’s RAID’ed, that’s it. 2 drives in JBOD is 2 volumes, no problem doing what you want to do. 2 drives in RAID 0 always will be in RAID 0. 2 drive mirrored (RAID 1) will always want to be mirrored.

    David,

This site also has a good explanation of varied RAID levels: https://www.acnc.com/raid

April 23, 2012 at 10:25 pm in reply to: RAID5 possible with SONNET FUSION D500P?

    Thomas,

I’m familiar with the Sonnet product you speak of. Buying the 6Gb/s “newer” card wouldn’t make a difference in performance as the back-plane on the Sonnet box is only 3Gb/s. The reason I made mention of the D500P card along with the 2314 card is it’s the default combination used by many companies when a JBOD card isn’t wanted because RAID 5 is required & it (the 2314 card)plays well with the Silicon Image chip in your Sonnet product. Since you already have the Sonnet box, it might be a good idea for you to contact them directly to get the inside scoop.

Hope that helps. The only reason I don’t normally recommend Highpoint is that their support is known to be not so good…..Driver updates, support, etc, but again, to do what you want to do, RAID 5 on a PM box, it’s your only real option.

    Thomas,

Your only real option with that enclosure is the Highpoint 2314 card, which offers RAID 5. While I generally don’t ever recommend Highpoint, they are the only offering providing what you’re looking for.

March 28, 2012 at 10:37 pm in reply to: RAID 5 inside my macpro

    Mike,

In an external (I’m guessing since you mentioned 4 drives) 4 bay chassis you’ll be faster in RAID 0 than with RAID 5 (if you have the option of either or) & you’re already understanding that you’ll lose a little bit more than 1 drive’s capacity running in RAID 5, as 1 drive is used for parity in the event that 1 of your 4 drives fails.

There are options out there that will allow you to populate a chassis with 4 drives and connect via Fire Wire 800, or eSATA or USB 2.0 that offer RAID 5 on-board & in fact we sell a unit like that: EB400FR or, you could go with a mini-SAS connected JBOD chassis like ours: EB400MS and populate with your own drives & buy an Areca 1223X card which will give you hardware RAID outside the box but at a higher cost and the use of a PCIe slot on your Mac Pro..where as the cheaper Fire Wire 800 RAID 5 box wouldn’t need an additional card to run it.

Ultimately you’ll be weighing price and speed against price & I/O and speed.

So, there’s 2 options for you in the realm of external drive storage offerings.

Of course the more drives you have, the faster you’ll go also…our eight bay mini-SAS EB800-MS with the Areca 1223X card will give you 900-1000MB/s in RAID 5 while with the 4 bay you’ll be running at about 1/2 that speed.

We’re all here to help if you need more suggestions.

    Michael,

If you end up going external, think about what I/O you’d want to use, what kind of speed you’d need (Codec depending), what software you’ll be using, etc. With all that information in mind we’ll (Bob, myself & whomever else) be able to steer you in the right direction. We are here to help, that’s what we’re here for.
