    Rainer,

My 2 cents. Our Proavio EB400CR Combo RAID is well liked by Adobe for use with CS6:
    https://www.proavio.com/index.php/products/desktop/eb400cr

Our product has also been well received by film-maker Patrick Read Johnson.

Features 1 X USB 3.0 port, 2 Fire Wire 800 ports and a eSATA port.

RAID levels offered are RAID 0,1,5 JBOD & our own “disk clone” feature.

We’re only manufacturing it in a desktop RAID at this time.

    Ben,

The previous version of the EB800MS (3G) was discontinued. We’re now selling the next generation EB800MS, which is 6G. No stock of the 3G versions exist in the US. If you place an order for a Proavio EB800MS, you will be getting the latest 6G version. I’ll be working diligently to make sure that ALL of our dealers update the information on their respective sites to indicate 6G.

Anything else, feel free to call me, email me, or post back here.

    Thanks for your consideration Ben.

    Paul,

    Our EB800MS 8 bay (with Areca 1223X) now has a 6Gb/s backplane 1000MB/s in RAID 5
(the previous version had a 3Gb/s backplane.

Or our 16 bay IS316JS with expansion (with Areca 1882X), supports 6Gb/s at 1600MB/s RAID 5

Either product can be purchased through Alex at DV411 as well.

    Matt,

FYI, for about 700.00 over your storage budget, we could do a 8TB RAID 5 EB800MS, with an Areca 1223X card, complete. RAID 5 speeds are 900MB/s read/write. You’d have a little less than 7TB usable after the RAID 5.

We have advertised on the Cow in the past, just thought I’d throw that out there.

    Brendan,

Since nobody has answered, it would seem nobody has run into your issue, likely because nobody else has the same kind of storage you do. I’d contact the manufacturer & see if they’ll back what you purchased from them, part of the reason that after sales support is so critical.

One does get what one pays for.

    Good luck!

February 11, 2013 at 5:29 pm in reply to: replacement drives for HD Pro

    Angus & David.

Ultimately Angus, with what David said & what I know, it’ll either work or it won’t. If CalDigits’ hardware,(backplane) locks you out, then it won’t work. Figured with you out of warranty though, what have you to lose? Another idea would be to use that HDPro as is, with it’s lower capacity drives, reformat? as at least you know the product works with the drives that came with it.

I just wanted to hold off on commenting until someone else did.

I even asked (via Skype) my old CalDigit contact about Angus’ post, but they didn’t reply….so I thought I’d do what I could to help.

Bottom line? Not to up-sell, but don’t short change yourself either, always buy more capacity than you think you’ll need.

I don’t think anyone on this forum would disagree with that statement.

    Angus,

Not to discount what David Roth Weiss (my friend) says, but after consulting with our technicians here, (at Proavio), you should be able to use 6Gb/s drives in that product, it will be backward compatible & you should get the same performance as you did with 3Gb/s drives. Hope that helps.

    Ben,

Not a problem, I’m here to help.

The EB800MS does not offer expansion, although the IS316JS (16 bay) does.

The 1223X card will work fine for you with the EB800MS, you can expect 900MB/s + Read-Write speeds in RAID 5.

The 1882 card would allow you to use expander products like the IS316JS down the road.
