  • Looking for relatively simple RAID setup advice

Posted by Ben Crosbie on February 5, 2013 at 3:51 pm

Hi all, I’ve been a longtime reader of the Cow and occasional contributor to other sub forums. I’ve got a simple edit setup – just one Mac Pro connected to an eSATA 12tb RAID5. I’m getting close to running out of space with lots of upcoming projects, and I’d like to step up to a much larger, better RAID that will be faster and last longer.

Currently I’m thinking of getting the ProAvio EB800MS, putting 24TB of drives in it, and getting an areca ARC-1223-8I-MS RAID Controller Card. This seems like a good option to me (what ProAvio seems to bundle together on their site) and within my budget. However, I’m just wondering if that Areca card will work for me – i.e. why would I want to get the more expensive 1882 series over the 1223 series? Any advice is appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Ben

    Ben,

If you have the money to spend, the 1882 card is just a bit better, also if you want to upgrade your capacity later, going with say our IS316JS, 16 bay, the 1882 is the card you’d want to use with that product.

    Thanks Jonathan,

So the higher end card gives me expandability. Another question, is the EditBox itself expandable? And would I need the better card to do that if it is?

    Ben,

Not a problem, I’m here to help.

The EB800MS does not offer expansion, although the IS316JS (16 bay) does.

The 1223X card will work fine for you with the EB800MS, you can expect 900MB/s + Read-Write speeds in RAID 5.

The 1882 card would allow you to use expander products like the IS316JS down the road.

Ok great, thanks again. The IS316JS is more than I need (and possibly for a while), so I think the EditBox is the way to go for now.

One more question Jon, is the EditBox listed as “EB800MS” only 6G or are there 3G versions? I just see the EB800MS listed on a retailers site, but in the description it only mentions 3G.

    Ben,

The previous version of the EB800MS (3G) was discontinued. We’re now selling the next generation EB800MS, which is 6G. No stock of the 3G versions exist in the US. If you place an order for a Proavio EB800MS, you will be getting the latest 6G version. I’ll be working diligently to make sure that ALL of our dealers update the information on their respective sites to indicate 6G.

Anything else, feel free to call me, email me, or post back here.

    Thanks for your consideration Ben.
