October 1, 2015 at 7:22 pm in reply to: special action needed for recent lunar eclipse– having issues! Thanks for your response, Kalle, but a few questions:
1) How can I specify the action to trim the image so that only the moon is shown when the moon itself might vary randomly throughout the imaging set? The actions I’ve been able to make so far base trimming on the first image only, to be applied equally to all the others which wouldn’t work out since the moon itself is varying in size.
2) How would I get all the moons to be the same size since they differ?
I follow with #3 as I could simply set up a black colored background, but still not sure how to go about 1 & 2.
Warping comes from image transformation, but probably not worth using it here.

August 14, 2013 at 10:25 pm in reply to: need some he*lp with either a css to grd conversion or the ability to refine grad editorThanks. I ended up just doing that- inputting the stops and opacities manually. There were 100 stops and I had to try and get them as close together as possible. In the end, the resulting gradient didn’t work out anyway, but it was an interesting experiment in case a situation arrives in the future where I need to do this.

April 26, 2013 at 11:48 am in reply to: how can I sharpen through an alpha channel like in Photoshop?Problem solved. Created an action in Photoshop to do what I wanted to, then used Virtual Dub to convert the video to an image sequence, allowed PS to do the custom sharpening, and then Virtual Dub to reassemble the images back into the video.

September 9, 2012 at 1:21 pm in reply to: need a good automated process for color correction/ contrast of slide scansBill,
Thanks for the info. Since I don’t have Vista on the main PC, I do have a laptop with it and decided to download and try out Lightroom. In all honesty, I can’t see where it’s that much different from Photoshop except for simpler organization maybe. I can see where it’s easier to fix a bunch of photos at once, but I have used Photoshop actions also. When you speak of being able to save some severely blurred photos in Lightroom, how were you able to do this? I have a few that could stand rescuing.
The above being said, I also downloaded the latest Photoshop CS6 and wanted to compare it with the CS4 I currently have. I didn’t see very many changes though and to me it wouldn’t justify the upgrade cost at this time.
I’m new to Lightroom, so if I’m missing anything or I am incorrect in my assumptions, please share.
Thanks in advance,

June 30, 2012 at 2:45 am in reply to: trying to find tutorial on slowing down close up bird footageThanks, I took a look at the mattes tutorial, but I’m not sure how to create the matte to use with Twixtor. She already has a matte within the tutorial, but doesn’t explain how she made it or how it was used within Twixtor.
I have had some success with tracking points, another tutorial she created that was easier to follow. I think a combination of tracking points and mattes might be the answer if I can figure out the mattes in more detail.

June 29, 2012 at 4:27 pm in reply to: trying to find tutorial on slowing down close up bird footageOnly problem when I cut down sensitivity is that I lose the characteristics Twixtor is producing. I think what I need to do is only apply Twixtor to certain parts of the bird at a time. As the wing sweeps by the body, for example, Twixtor is distorting that part of the body to follow the wing. It doesn’t happen for long, but it is an unacceptable distortion. I have tried to isolate parts of the bird that I do not want Twixtor to affect by using this tutorial: https://vimeo.com/32155510
but if I just draw a mask around the areas I want to keep isolated, Twixtor seems to be affecting them anyway so I’m not sure how to get around this.
This is an important project and I don’t mind taking time to try and do it right, but I am new to Twixtor and still trying to learn it. I just hoped to have a lot more control over the exact areas I want the program to work on, but so far I seem to have little control even when following the above tutorial.

Thank you, John. To date, I have never yet tried to use a green screen for background. Just out of curiosity, if the foreground subject also has green elements, wouldn’t these be canceled out along with the background? I’ll just have to try it and see what happens.
I gave up on Vegas. I also have After Effects and the Keylight plug-in seems to be exactly what I was looking for. Vegas was getting closer and closer, especially using the secondary color correction, but I just couldn’t quite eliminate halos in not as well lit areas. I’ve tended to use Vegas though for almost all video needs because I find processing faster than with AE, but in the case of keying I’ll be using AE for now on.

Thanks. This sort of works, but I find it awkward. I’m fairly new to Vegas, so perhaps that’s the reason. What I think would be easiest for me is to create two separate compositions, each with different keyframed portions, and then layer the two compositions and erase sections of the top layer leaving the composition underneath. I don’t know if there’s a way to do this in Vegas 9. In After Effects, I would simply create two “pre-comps” and then use the “eraser tool” to erase the top layer leaving the bottom. Does Vegas 9 have an eraser tool and can I create the equivalent of precomps?
