John is correct. You can feed a second camera with the tape out. It is a mini 5 pin and you can get a 5 pin to 2 XLR cable from remote audio. However, the 302 mixer doesn’t have the provision to monitor both outputs.

Hey Dan, You should do a search of Wexler’s site jwsound.net or the RAMPS group for your answer. Lots of pros there. Although this doesn’t answer your question directly, my approach is to use a lockit box on the camera that is jammed to my 744T.

  • Hey Emanuele,
You shouldn’t have a problem at all. I just finished a shoot with 2 reds and a 744T. With the ambient lockit boxes you’ll need a lemo to lemo cable for jamming. First, jam the box from your recorder. The led will flash green when it picks up sync. Then, plug it into the camera. The red will automatically jam to the external TC . Simple.

    Hi Matt,
I agree with all that has been said and perhaps you should rent some gear to try it out.
However to answer your question about what equipment you should look for: I would use a boom mic ( boompole, shotgun mic, suspension and wind protection) a mixer ( at least 2 inputs with stereo out and tone generator) an audio recorder ( a lot of indi film makers like the zoom H4N) and a wireless system or 2. The radio mics are good for micing the talent and or sending an audio scratch track to the camera from the mixer.

Although I just do location recording it is my understanding that in the pulldown during telecine 30ND becomes 29.97. I’ve never had a problem.

    Hi Russ.
I used to have an Fr-2 and you are right about the miserable battery life.I used to run it on 7.2 v rechargable tamiya style batteries.
About timecode settings; I have always set my timecode to run at 30 fps non drop when working with film.

    Hey Jake,
The only mixer that I know of that records is the Sound Devices 552. 5 inputs 2 track recorder built in.
Certainly, I would use a mixer and send a feed to the camera as well as a recorder. Zoom H4N’s are popular inexpensive recorders. There are a number of mixers you could choose. I use Sound Devices 302 and 442 mixers.
SQN,PSC, Wendt, Shure all make mixers; it depends on budget, of course. If I were you I’d rent.

Hi Eric. I run a zoom H4N in my bar with a SD 302 as a back up recorder. I found that the line in is not a +4 dbu level and needs padding. I found some variable pads that work well for me made by Rapco. cvpblox variable pad blox. Here’s a link. https://www.rapcohorizon.com/products/devices/blox/Default.aspx
    Hope this helps.
