  • Timecode sync – Sound Devices 744T – ambient lockit box -Red

For a canadian production (a new documentary) I’m going to use the 744T Sound Devices recorder and need to sync the recorder timecode with the camera (the DOP will shoot with a Red) through the Ambient Lockit box, using the 744 as a master.

This is what other sound technicians suggested me to do, and I would like to know if there is anyone who has already worked with these ‘toys’ and could gently give me any suggestions and also repeat me the right technical procedure we should make to ensure that everything works fine.

    Thanks

Hello Emanuele and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

In the absence of solid info here, I’d call Sound Devices and speak to someone in technical support or query the newsgroup rec.arts.movies.production.sound

Also, Ambient has excellent tech support.
Keep in mind that a LockIt is more than a TC device.
It also can pump out black burst. (Very important if you shoot mulitple cams.)

If all is well, the LockIt boxes have documentation. read it.
One known pitfall i know about, you have to power down / up after you change settings.

    Hey Emanuele,
You shouldn’t have a problem at all. I just finished a shoot with 2 reds and a 744T. With the ambient lockit boxes you’ll need a lemo to lemo cable for jamming. First, jam the box from your recorder. The led will flash green when it picks up sync. Then, plug it into the camera. The red will automatically jam to the external TC . Simple.
    Cheers
    Jon
