Thank you very much for the compliment, it’s very much appreciated. I plan on releasing another Pro Motion Menu Kit either later this week or early next week that is equally if not more impressive than the previous one.

So just to keep this on subject, I have experience using both Encore and DVD Studio Pro, and I prefer Encore by a long shot for what I use it for. I am aware of most of the bugs that it has, so I never run into problems since I subconsciously avoid doing what causes them.

I’m guessing you will want to keyframe the particles/sec down to 0 at the end of the letter. This will cause it to stop producing the particles, and keep the existing ones as long as the life of the particle is long enough.

April 13, 2009 at 6:36 pm in reply to: Windows Dvd From FCP

I think he wants to know if there is a Windows authoring program that imports FCP project files so that he doesn’t have to render it out… and the answer to that is not really.

You might be able to import your FCP project into Premiere CS4, then using dynamic link, bring that into Adobe Encore without the need to render. Also, you probably won’t be able to import the motion file thats in your FCP project into premiere. That might have to be rendered.

I have not tested this out, but in theory it should work. I would recommend just exporting it on the mac using Quicktime Animation codec or DNxHD codec (requires free download).

Unfortunately your system might not have enough ram to properly render your comp. You are using an extremely high res image, which requires huge amounts of ram for after effects to handle it. If you have already tried closing down all other applications/processes that could be eating up ram, then your only other options might be to add more ram (which may or may not resolve your issue), or break that large image/comp up into smaller ones. Maybe try splitting the image right down the middle vertically in photoshop, save it as 2 separate images (right and left), and use those in after effects. Once Adobe goes 64bit, these kind of issues should be resolved.

Layer styles are rendered last, its just how After Effects works since it is not a node based compositor.

Just adding effects should not mess up the 3D layer ordering, only adding layer styles should do this. If you want to add a layer style, you should precompose that layer, and apply the style in the precomposition.

What version of After Effects are you using? Do you have a multiprocessor system? If so, do you have multiprocessing enabled?

If you have cs3, try setting your maximum memory usage to 99% (not 120%)

    Disable disk cache.

Set your maximum ram cache size to maximize how many processors you are using, without going below the minimum 500MB. For example, if you are doing multiprocessing with 4 cores, and you only have 3GB of ram accessible by the OS (Windows XP), you can set your Ram Cache size to 41.5% (849MB), so that 3 cores can use 849MB, and 1 core and approx. 450MB is left for the OS.

Or you can try disabling multiprocessing, and max out the ram cache size.

April 10, 2009 at 4:58 pm in reply to: Any ideas on animating this cartoon grass?

You could make one blade of grass animate in a precomposition, using either a warp, puppet tool, or simply setting the anchor point to the base of the blade, and use a wiggle expression on the rotation.

Once you have the animation down for one blade, you can just duplicate the precomposition many times in a new comp, and slightly offset the layers so they aren’t all moving at exactly the same time.

His problem is that his precomposition has a fixed resolution, and its not retaining the resolution when he zooms in on it in the master composition. You need to activate the collapse transformations for the precomposition layer in your main comp. Also make sure none of your layers in the precomp are scaled way down. In the precomp, make them 3D layers and modify their z position to make them further away.

  • Do not use CC Sphere for what you are trying to accomplish. You want to make the flags into 3D layers, and set all their anchor points to the center subject (you can use the Pan Behind tool to move the anchor point around freely). Once the flags are 3D layers, they will go in front and behind the keyed out subject regardless of their layer position, just like you want. You will also want to make the center subject a 3D layer so the other layers interact with it correctly.

Once you set the anchor points on all the flags to the center of where they are going to circle around, you can then keyframe their rotation.

Encore does not support this feature, sorry. You can add content to the disc in the build tab, but you cannot access it from one of the menus.
