I’m animating a chess board with a dozen or so videos covering the black squares of the board. All the clips are HD, 720p, shot on Sony Xdcam. I created a board composition, this has the clips + the chess board. Then moved the board comp. into my main comp which is has little more than some standard effects and a camera. The camera layer was created to move the viewer around the clips. I am wanting to zoom in pretty close on each clip.

The problem: While the composition looks fine at a distance, the minute I start zooming in with my camera layer I’m losing alot of clarity and my individual clips are blurring a bit. I’ve rendered it out and it’s remains in the final product.

Question: How can I maintain my original image quality on the close ups?

What size is your final render comp? Also, it may help to see a screenshot or two to determine exactly what’s going on..

His problem is that his precomposition has a fixed resolution, and its not retaining the resolution when he zooms in on it in the master composition. You need to activate the collapse transformations for the precomposition layer in your main comp. Also make sure none of your layers in the precomp are scaled way down. In the precomp, make them 3D layers and modify their z position to make them further away.
