  • comp not rendering due to large comp

Posted by Jeff Blasczyk on April 10, 2009 at 10:37 am

I recently finished a music video for the most part and it will not render, or will only render in pieces due to an image buffer problem. I createda 3d comp that has a width of about 6000 pixels at a about a 3*4 dimension. I have lowered the max ram cach to 10 percent and enabled the option beloe with better results but it quit rendering when it is referencing from the large 3d comp.

Is there a way to get around this. Shrink the comp size without distorting the work?

This is a link to an unfinished version https://vimeo.com/3972177
It stops rendering currently right after the crown.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

What version of After Effects are you using? Do you have a multiprocessor system? If so, do you have multiprocessing enabled?

If you have cs3, try setting your maximum memory usage to 99% (not 120%)

    Disable disk cache.

Set your maximum ram cache size to maximize how many processors you are using, without going below the minimum 500MB. For example, if you are doing multiprocessing with 4 cores, and you only have 3GB of ram accessible by the OS (Windows XP), you can set your Ram Cache size to 41.5% (849MB), so that 3 cores can use 849MB, and 1 core and approx. 450MB is left for the OS.

Or you can try disabling multiprocessing, and max out the ram cache size.

I have a similar problem, trying to render out some 4K-material. I’ve been playin around with the settings in the memory and cache, but i didn’t really know what I was doing. I’ll try your settings Jon, thanks!

I got kind of lost at the last part. I am working in CS3 with a dual 2 Ghz processor (AMD Turion) and 2 Gigs of RAM.
I am however working with a new problem, keep getting an error message: ram preview needs 2 or more frames for playback. I cannot even preview at this point so it keeps getting better.

Unfortunately your system might not have enough ram to properly render your comp. You are using an extremely high res image, which requires huge amounts of ram for after effects to handle it. If you have already tried closing down all other applications/processes that could be eating up ram, then your only other options might be to add more ram (which may or may not resolve your issue), or break that large image/comp up into smaller ones. Maybe try splitting the image right down the middle vertically in photoshop, save it as 2 separate images (right and left), and use those in after effects. Once Adobe goes 64bit, these kind of issues should be resolved.
