  • Rotating an image around a subject, as if the subject were in the middle

Hey everyone, I looked on the site and I couldn’t find exactly what I needed. I just joined but I’m hoping I can find some help. I’ve been experimenting with AE for a couple months and I’m really enjoying it. Basically what I need is for a band of flags (I’m just going to put pictures of flags side by side) to rotate around a figure who I keyed out. I need it to look as if the band passes in front of the figure, but then goes behind it when it rotates around. The best I could do is put a CCsphere on the flags, but I don’t know how to get the figure to look as if he is being revolved around by the flags. Any help would be great. Thanks!

If I understand you right, then what you’ll want to do is create a null, make it 3d, then move it to the same position as your figure. Then parent your flags (which should also be 3d) to your null object, and spin the null.

Do not use CC Sphere for what you are trying to accomplish. You want to make the flags into 3D layers, and set all their anchor points to the center subject (you can use the Pan Behind tool to move the anchor point around freely). Once the flags are 3D layers, they will go in front and behind the keyed out subject regardless of their layer position, just like you want. You will also want to make the center subject a 3D layer so the other layers interact with it correctly.

Once you set the anchor points on all the flags to the center of where they are going to circle around, you can then keyframe their rotation.

    Hi,

Great advice here, I was hoping to find a way to make it look like its tilted almost (the same sort of effect from Spherize, or CC Sphere) I’m working on a similar animation with people rotating around an object, I originally drew all the people in Illustrator and used an Arch to make them look like they were in a circle (almost birds eye view type: see attached), and am having trouble keeping that feeling in AE. I can only manage to get them to stand next to each other at the same height.

    Appreciate any help!

You might want to look into Planespace (https://www.redgiantsoftware.com/products/categories/motion-graphics/planespace/), for dealing with precise 3d arrangement of objects in after effects.
