Also do you have the Mercury Engine running in Software or GPU Hardware Mode?

It could just be a quality “look” that happens when processing that section of the “effect” of transition being used but doesn’t appear when exported or rendered out.

I just did some research on your model camera and I apologise. It seems your camera can recording in LP mode when set to DV format.

Perhaps the camera is not set properly in playback mode (VTR) so you aren’t able to see the image on the camera… Is there an Auto format setting when a tape goes in and plays that it adjusts to the correct playback mode?

It is possible that the camera is sending a mixed signal down the firewire in auto mode. You may need to set it to DV and LP playback for PPro to recognise the signal properly..?

Another possiblity is that the Recording Capture settings are not set to DV. You can have control over the deck in HDV capture settings but won’t actually get to capture.

Im sure there is someone out there with a successful use of your situation with the same camera and an LP tape.

I have a (once was $8000) Sony HDV Z1P and it can’t playback LP mode tapes as it is not a format it records in. Unless you can get the camera to playback the tape on its own then no software will be able to ingest it.

So I take it that this was not the camera that recorded the tape.

LP mode is a consumer recording speed that will not playback on a recording device that doesn’t record in that format.

There is nothing wrong with premiere pro its the camera that can’t play the tape. You will need a camera that can record in LP mode to play it back and PPro will capture it fine.

Ok. The cfa file is an uncompressed version of the audio. (This process would happen with MP3 files too).

I m interested to know if you are editing from the source panel and adding in out point sections to timeline one at a time or throwing the whole clip to the timeline and removing the bits you don’t want.

I am guessing the section at a time method is creating the multiple instances of the cfa files…

How long are these original clips? And what are the recorded from?

This is NOT typified behaviour. Can you please let us know if you’re working on pc or mac.

Pc is likely you are wooing from an external drive which changes letters as it is not locked to a letter and may be changing which loses the location to assets.

Mac you could be having sol permission issues which need to be repaired.

Also provide your OS version.

From the naming structure of the cfa files generated it looks like the file you are working with has had to conform all the audio used into 48Khz which is why you are getting these larger files. Basically the video file you are working with is using a different Khz rate to the 48K in the sequence so it is converting it to a new audio file that is the cfa file itself which is linked to the original clip, but set to 48K for sync in the sequence you are editing in. 🙂

So know we understand what is happening… If you want to avoid this process and just edit in what you have and export with the same Khz sample you will need to make a new sequence with matching properties to the clip.

In CS5.5 you can select a clip in the project panel and right click to open the options and select the “New Sequence From Clip”. This will make a sequence matching all the properties of the clip. Then there is no reason for the cfa files. 🙂

Are you certain the Camera isn’t using the downconvert function making the firewire connection DV and not HDV…

This catches heaps of people out…

Could be a faulty cable? Could be the connection to the camera was done in the wrong order and it has been fried. (must add camera connection to switched off camera and the other end to the computer then switch camera on).

Try to capture in DV with the downconvert on to rule out the cable and camera connection being fried.

Dump the preferences by holding down the cmd (mac)/control (pc) + alt + shift keys during PPro launch. This will reset any presets you may have created and not exported (so I strongly suggest you export any presets and reimport them after the preferences dump).

I would think that the camera being set to not downconvert, the firewire having control of the deck and the capture settings on PPro set to HDV then you technically should be getting an image in the capture window. Only when you are capturing do you lose the tape image to the message referring you to the camera/deck for previewing.

Did it ever work in HDV? If all else fails reinstall…
