So far I’m really happy. I was nervous upgrading given all the negative posts but I cloned my system ( 2.5 ghz G5 PPC, 2 gigs ram, ATI9800xt card, Blackmagic Decklink Extreme ) and just did a straight upgrade. Went fine. I haven’t done any major jobs on my system, which is usually where I find the bugs but I’ve done some small stuff and all seems great. FCP seems stable, everything seems to work as it should, motion has given the odd crash but it’s so sophisticated now I haven’t really done more than play with it. Color took a while to get my head around but I like it more and more, it’s a bit buggy but not as much as I thought from the posts, surprisingly useable on my low power system, I’m getting about 15 fps with DV and uncompressed, round trips have worked ok so far. Soundtrack seems good, definitely more useable than the previous version. Compressor seems a bit odd as the batch processing window takes a while to update so I’m never sure if it’s working but I’ve done some DVDs and they look fine (surprisingly it’s the app. that’s hardest for me to get my head around).
All in all I’m glad I upgrade…of course that could all change tomorrow when I discover some major problem but so far so good.

Thanks so much for that info. saved major embarrassment with a client…. I’d never have worked it out under pressure….

Of course you’re right Walter, it won’t effect my business in any way at all, I’m currently shooting 5 min dv inserts for tv and it works perfectly as is. In fact it’ll just waste my time as I spend hours learning color, motion 3, stp 2 etc.
But I can’t help it, it’s the kid at Christmas feeling, and I don’t really understand it, what’s so exciting about computer applications?, I think it’s a kind of addiction….Counselling???

That annoys me… why should I be punished for being a long time, loyal user?

I feel a bit dumb cos I’ve been using FCP for years but only capturing native formats (DV , HDV, 10 bit uncompressed), I did render a HDV programme to 10 bit uncompressed once but I’m wondering how to capture one format as another??
e.g. How do I capture my HDV footage as DVCproHD in real time? do I need a card, I have a decklink extreme but I presume I need some form of HD card? or do I need to use the MM to convert everything after capture?
Excuse my ignorance…Johnny

Reading this thread with interest. Just a question on the last bit of advice, when I’m making DVDs I invariably use ac3, what are the pros and cons between aiff and ac3 ( I assume aiff is bigger but better and ac3 is smaller but worse, but what about compatibility with players etc.?????)
Thanks,
Johnny

I totally agree with what you’re saying, yet every time an update comes out I’m itching to use it, even if there’s no obvious benefit, it’s some wierd sense of security I get which totally flys in the face of logic….similar dynamic to my changing cameras etc. every few years.
I can’t be the only one…Johnny

Don’t think I have that option as I’m working in regular PAL 25fps. Thanks anyway.
