Forgot to add… the system I am considering should come in at just over $4.5k for around 44TB of RAID5 or RAID6 storage.

    24 2TB drives @ $99/each = $2,400
    Noreco enclosure @ < $1,400
    Areca 1880X RAID @ < $800

Getting ready to buy a new RAID enclosure, drives, and card. Was hoping when I got to the end of this thread Christopher was going to share the information he received from ATTO tech support regarding that 680.

I came across this thread looking for information as I am considering this Norco enclosure (for cost and number of drives it will accommodate -a whopping 24) and the Areca 1880X RAID controller card to “drive” it.

I have an 8GB G-Technology esPRO set up in RAID5 that I use for whatever project(s) is active, so this new set up is more for a general storage system. In other words, the new system doesn’t necessarily need to be fast enough to edit 2k, but I don’t really want to skimp too much on speed (definitely would like to be able to support a 1080p workflow from the RAID, which seems feasible over SAS).

I realize I might be derailing the thread a bit, but it does involve the Areca 1880x (which is in the thread title). Perhaps I should consider the ATTO 680 for my setup instead? It’s been nearly two years since this was posted, so perhaps the “kinks” Bob mentions with the ATTO have been worked out?

  • Gotcha. Didn’t realize that override could affect things. After all these years, I’ve never really even bothered to research what that override is actually for. For my benefit and others who read this thread (and if you’ve got the time and inclination), can you let me know what the override does, and how it might affect background video?

    Thanks in advance, Stan.

I would suggest not burning as a WMV first. Export the footage using the MPEG-DVD export setting (this will assure correct Adobe DVD settings and also avoid having to re-encode the footage in your Encore project).

Also, you may want to give the text a slight transparency (set opacity to 98%).

Also, if applicable, be sure that the title file is set to the correct dimensions, pixel aspect ratio, and FPS (not just the project file).

Finally, be sure your FPS settings for the file are correct (29.97 if it’s for DVD, or 23.976 if you’re creating a 24fps DVD). Without seeing the footage, it sounds like it could be an upper/lower fields problem.

  • p.s. As an added bit of weirdness, even though the menu is set to first play, when viewing a burned DVD, the disc always begins with one of the project’s timelines (not the menu).

In Encore’s preview pane, the project opens, as it should, with the menu. No idea why this is the case, as the settings for first play are as they should be.

I’ve built a million DVD projects, and this is the first time I’ve experienced either of the above problems.

May 15, 2012 at 6:13 pm in reply to: CS4 Looping Menu won’t loop

I know this is an old thread, but perhaps someone will have the answer. I have an Encore title menu with a video/audio background (57 seconds), but I can’t get it to loop. The video loops when I use the Encore CS4 preview pane, but when I build a DVD, the disc goes to “stop” once the background video completes (this is true for any player I use). I have the background video set to “forever” for the loop, and I changed the “end action” for the menu from “stop” to the menu itself (though according to Adobe, the video should loop forever even if the end action is set to stop, as long as “forever” is selected for the loop duration).

Any thoughts or help are greatly appreciated!

April 27, 2012 at 2:58 am in reply to: Can not find any Menu Templates in EncoreDVD

For the record, I’m having the same problem with CS4. The kicker is, I’ve used the menu library in Encore a million times, but suddenly all the libraries are simply gone! I can’t find them anywhere on my computer. What the what? I’m having to deconstruct menus from other projects and convert them for new projects.

March 23, 2012 at 11:38 pm in reply to: CS6 survey leaked new features

I think someone lied to you, Vincent. From what I’ve seen (and suffered), the differences between Premiere CS4 and CS5 are vast. There are several documented bugs in CS4 (that I encounter all the freaking time) that Adobe decided not to fix, instead opting to address the issues only in CS5, so you have to upgrade ($$$$) for the fix. It’s kind of infuriating.

I’m experiencing further problems right now with even just trying to use a plug-in (Colorista Free only works in CS5). I purchased Colorista in July 2009, which is simply AWFUL in Premiere CS4 –the color wheels are like trying to move boulders and there is NO PRECISION whatsoever; less than a year later Colorista II drops and I’m left with a buggy product (Colorista in Premiere CS4) that I can’t get help with.

Also wondering where you heard CS6 for summer of 2011, considering it’s summer of 2012 and we still don’t have it.

March 13, 2012 at 7:29 pm in reply to: dumping video footage from 5d in the field…

I came across this thread researching devices for dumping CF cards to hard drives/RAID in the field (still looking for the best solution).

For others who come across this thread looking for general info:

While people did mention making sure you’re copying data to not just one but two separate drives, I find it odd that no one mentioned check-sums, etc.

Simply copying a file by drag-and-drop doesn’t mean you were successful with copying and protecting your precious data (corruption can occur, only part of a file gets copied, etc.). At the very least you should utilize a copy program like TeraCopy (a PC checksum program -there are definitely better ones, and others for Mac) that runs check sums on the original and copied files to make sure everything was copied and there is no corruption. On our last feature, we actually had both a software program and a human for this (this person is usually called the Data Wrangler or Data Asset Manager).

Ideally you would be copying to a redundant RAID system to make sure your data is even more protected (though nothing is absolute!), but I realize this is not always financially feasible, and obviously more difficult to have running in the field (especially if you’re a small run-and-gun outfit).

I’m still definitely interested in hearing what people are using to dump CF cards to drives in the field.

A few people mentioned that CF cards are cheap storage and you should just buy a bunch of those, but at $115 for the “ExtremePro” (I wouldn’t use anything less for shooting video) 16GB SanDisk card, compared to $100 for a terabyte on hard drive, I’m not sure this is actually the case.

I would like to find a CF reader that will safely transfer data to a two disk RAID mirrored hard drive (either spinning or, better yet, SSD) without having to use a computer in between (just CF reader straight to SSD). I’m not sure if such a beast exists, but that would be great.
