what about locking the camera down, shooting the lights as they warm up, then speeding the shot up in post?

Homer: And star wipe and we’re out.
Lisa: Dad, there are other transitions besides star wipes, you know.
Homer: Why have burger when you can have steak?

did you try precomposing the growing vines?

take a look at Wes Anderson’s “The Life Aquatic.” In the second to the last scene, Anderson has an 8 or 9 shot that sounds like what you want.

Walter, as usual, is absolutely right. If you don’t have experience, try to get a job with a production company before you try freelancing. Like you said, its hard to shove your way into the business, and without solid experience you’re starting at a big disadvantage.
If you DO have some experience under your belt, then, in my opinion, there is no way to truly make it OTHER than shoving your way in. There are a million people with HDV cameras and Final Cut fighting tooth and nail for work…if you want a scrap, you have to scrap to get it. There are job boards (like the one here at the COW, mandy.com, craigslist, etc) where you can find some work here and there, but if you rely solely on the web, you’ll starve more often than you’ll eat. Hit the streets and learn to convince yourself that, in sales, “no means maybe.” Freelancing is tough because, really, you have two jobs…production and sales. There is no show without the business.

Just a funny story regarding the ownership of tapes before payment has been rendered…
I was on a shoot with a nightmare producer who was under the mistaken impression that he didn’t need to let the crew eat lunch…or dinner…nothing. We, the crew, called our company and informed our boss that we would be charging hefty meal penalties…our boss calls Nightmare Producer, who becomes indignant and threatens to fire us on the spot without pay. My boss calls me and said, “I don’t care what you have to do. DO NOT him have those tapes. You have my permission to use force, if necessary.” HAHA!
Never came to that, but it was nice to have permission. LOL.

While there are several different ways to achieve the deep, saturated colors you’re after, I have to ask why you want to do it in camera? You’ll have MUCH greater flexibility and control doing your color grading in post. If you do it all in camera, you’re going to have a much more difficult time changing anything if you aren’t entirely happy with what you shoot. I would utilize Apple Color, Magic Bullet Looks, or After Effects to tweak your color.
If you still decide to do it all in-camera, make sure you have an HD monitor that’s properly calibrated.

April 6, 2008 at 8:42 pm in reply to: can dropping a mini dv tape cause damage to footage itself?Unfortunately, dropping the tape can definitely damage it. As far as I know, there is no way to salvage the footage. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Sometimes you get lucky, other times…

AE isn’t really a good program for audio. i think most people here will agree that its best to take it BACK to Premier when you’re done in AE.
