  • Of course, I’m not that ruling that out completely, but the speed the drives run at, the in and out speed of the fibre channel card, and the fact that it runs happily on an Avid doing uncompressed work makes me less inclined to think it’s that. (Don’t worry, I don’t dual run it on Avid and FCP at the same time – I always re-configure it professionally).

    Easy set-up is Uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2 (HD) / 25fps / Blackmagic 1920 HD 50i and the playback setting is Blackmagic HDTV 1920 25hz 8 bit (1920×1080).

Which is everything as it should be.

  • Thanks for the reply. I actually had no idea that there was a render manager in the tools menu. Alas, however, no sign on the ghostly render files.

Oddly, in another project where that sequence was being worked on, it now claims the render files are happily inside their folder in the render folder in FCP Documents – and I’ve been over and over it, even searched in Finder for one of the render file names, but there’s just nothing showing up…

    Grrrr. (Thanks for your help).

ah ok I’ll take another look. still not ideal as I need to make Quicktimes first which sometimes takes 2 mins, sometimes 10, which all seems a little random when I’ve already rendered everything and I’m just exporting a reference though.

though that is a workaround, surely I should’t need to. if I wanted bodges and work arounds I’d have stuck with Avid!

thanks for the helpful advice though.

What video card are you using? The only reason I ask is that I’m doing similar to you – but half-way what you’re doing.

I’m offlining full-res stuff on FCP right now, doing most of the effects (shakes/wipes/lens flares etc) in Final Cut, but then moving to Symphony Nitris for the online/grade. In this instance, I’m exporting DNxHD 185 quicktimes from FCP to import directly into Avid for the grade.

If I were then to go back to FCP (no need to as I’m mastering from Avid) I’d export Blackmagic 8-bit HD Quicktimes which play in real time on my FCP suite (as it uses a Blackmagic Decklink video card).

However, if you want to maitain cut information (rather than having to make an ‘add edit’ in avid at each cut of the film) you’ll need to go down the Automatic Duck route (Pro export for getting to Avid, Pro Import for taking back from Avid).

    Good luck!

And I’ll tag onto this that once you’ve brought them in, and put them on the time-line, you might want to ‘select all’ and nest them into one managable clip. Easier to add effects to it that way. (though if you need to resize the image (like if you’ve brough in a 3888×2592 image and want to resize it to 1920×1080 – set one of them to 50% (ish) and copy and paste the basic motion to everything – THEN nest.)

    My twopence worth…

    Thought as much….

Just a pity I only get 8 tracks real time in FCP. A render for more isn’t too much of a hassle if they spill out I guess.

    Thanks for the reply.

Sapphire for me. Got nearly everything I need in there (nearly) and as it’s on my Avid (along with BCC) I don’t have to worry about searching for a similar effect to how I’d do it on Avid.

April 14, 2009 at 1:07 pm in reply to: Stop frame animation deflicker?

Thanks for the reply guys. I’ll look further into a solution. Part of the problem is that it’s not a wide scene with tiny animated subjects with a sky and ground that flicker though. It’s all close-ups on big action – which has big rigs attached to hold them up. And it’s more the removal of these rigs that cause the problems (shadows and luminosity changes) rather than any errant photographer set-ups.

Sure, there’s the odd lighting change, but it’s never an auto-iris issue or anything like that. In the main-run, the photography is exactly what I’d look for. It’s just the huge rugs that’s the problem.

    Thanks again.

April 13, 2009 at 7:54 am in reply to: hooking up two monitors to a new MacPro

That’s exactly what I do. I’ve got 2 x 23inch monitors, one on the main port, one on the mini-DVI port. However, any worrys about colour from the mini-DVI (if there are any) have always been overcome by using an external video monitor (through a Decklink HD Extreme 3 card).

It all works perfectly for me…. so far.

That was exceptionally useful. I’ve got one system running 6 and one running 5, and it bugs me when I’m on 5 and expect 6. Though Steve’s one word answer was ‘an’ answer, I really appreciate you taking the time to tag somethin on Shane.
