Stereo Audio on 1 track (like Soundtrack)
Hey folks.
Question first, then reasoning behind it – just in case someone has a good work-flow.
I want to minimise the amount of audio tracks I’ve got on the timeline. One proposed way around this from the dubbing guys is if I can take a stereo audio file (let’s say music) and have it on just A1 – then another stereo audio file (let’s say wildtrack) on A2. Therefore halving the amount of audio tracks.
If I remember right, this works in Soundtrack – but I was wondering if this would work in FCP (I’m assuming a big glittering no though).
The reason is that I’m working on an animation, which comprises of loads of different sketches. We’ll pre-edit them as final as we think, then send them to the dub for basic tracklaying of music effects and vocalistations.
We then get these back, and start putting together programme running orders using these pre-layed sketches. As much as we’d love to have everything run exactly to time, we know that we’ll be nipping and tucking a little out of sketches to fit to programme time, and overlapping for stings etc.
This means a) There’s no point in the track lay side of things being a full dub, and b) What I need to send back to the dub for the final mix needs to bare resemeblance to what they’ve sent me (so just a stereo mix-down of their Soundscape output wouldn’t suffice.
Hence the tracks idea. So if I had just Music, Vocalisations and Spot FX I’m probably looking at 12 audio tracks (due to track overlaps etc) as a minimum if left as two tracks per stereo piece.
I’l be moving spot-effects etc round to match action (especially more so when the cuts might happen) so believe me, it’s doubley important i have the track-lay separated.
With 16 tracks on my system, I could accomadate to a large extend what they’re doing, but if there’s a way to keep the info they send to me, and the Media Management side of things in FCP to a gentle level, that’d make me happier (I’ve never gotten over how FCP Studio 1 used to drop media from programme to programme – it’s made me over-cautious through time).
Any suggestions, on work-flow or just telling me to get over it and work with all 16 tracks… welcomed.
(I AM on 6.0.5 now though…)
