Thanks, I wanted to check it out for some time, and so I did. It seems like a great tool for fixing repetitive tasks, such as unsplit and fade from cursor, but for Markers it unfortunately only enables create/insert/delete/move/export options, but not, for instance “pair marker with media file on track so and so”, which is what I would need in this instance.

    Hi again,

A new problem have turned up. I usually use one timeline for importing all the footage, which I have now subtitled with the new Closed Captioning tool. I also use a second instance of Vegas for the final project, and I select, copy and paste media from the original importing timeline to the final version. With my old primitive hard subtitles, it works well to copy media from one instance to another, but now I see to my horror that it is still not possible to copy markers with media in Vegas. Somehow it is possible to attach them to media when sliding media back and forth, but any copy and paste leaves the markers where they are.

How on earth can that be? Either nobody works with markers, or nobody complains, because for sure anybody who works with markers or now closed captions in vegas must have complains. (Adding custom colour to different markers would be nice, for one).

I heard about the tip of copying the entire marker catalog from >View< >edit details< and “show commands”; clicking on the grey tabs immediately above and below the text entries you want, and pressing Control C, rather than rightclicking and copy (which copies a single cell entry). https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/24/869929

This indeed works, but I have now to manually do this for every media file I have, essentially quadrupling the number of actions for moving a simple media file from one instance of Vegas to another.

So, Sony Vegas developers, here’s what you should do (Please):
    1) Have option of locking markers/regions/cc to media files.
2)Develop a function in Vegas that allows Vegas to “print CC/regions/markers to video media generated text files, (IE EDITABLE TEXT FILES), and
    3) putting them where the cc/regions/markers were for a
    4) custom period of time (say 3 seconds, until next marker, until next region etc), and
    5) allowing the selection of multiple subsequent text entries, for customizeing font, size, background (not only stroke) etc parametres for all the entries.

While your at it, why dont you
    6) scrap the entire protype titler, (which is heavy, cumbersome and not user friendly), and upgrade the default legacy text editor, which is light, cumbersome, but user friendly) to allow for backgrounds for text (not just stroke), locking start position for any text for a template (as it is now, the text moves to new places depending on length of sentence, very annoying for subtitles and lower thirds).

The print CC/Markers/region option, if printing customizable fields, and an overhauled text generator, would hopefully solve the the sub- and titling problems that still, after 8 years with Vegas Pro, continually dragging the otherwise excellent editor down. (Read other posts for reference).

Exporting the markers and CCs to various subtitle formats is of course great – But im nowhere near that stage yet, a bit because the process is still so cumbersome.

Thank you very much. Just what I was looking for, and just in time for my newest subtitling project. Im sure others who struggle with the same will find this post useful.

I was just thinking I might want black semi transparent, instead of white semi transparent, but when i try replacing the {BgWhSemi} code with {BgBlkSemi}, the latter shows up as text, as if Vegas does not recognize it. Is it possibly a bug?

    Hi,

This is now a while ago I had this problem, but reading the thread again reminded me that the error, as far as I could see, rested with Vegas, and its ability to handle subtitling on long projects rather than using them sparingly as titles for names, places etc. I would not know if Vegas has fixed this in its new version, though I would doubt it.

As far as your question is concerned, you go open Regedit from the start menu, or simply enter Regedit in the “run” menu, navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ Eventlog \ Security folder.

Right click the folder, and you will see an option of “Permissions…” You will then see usernames in the top box, and their corresponding access in the bottom box. Verify that they are full access. But, like I said, for me I already had full control, and so the solution for me laid elsewhere.

Subtitling remains a nightmare in Vegas, and it is for me the single biggest problem with an otherwise fantastic software. I abhor the next time a client will ask me for a project that requires hard subtitles, as opposed to the soft that can be added in SonyVegas DVD Architect. This software is a pain to work with, and I would only use it for adding soft subtitles (ie, subtitles that can be added in the DVD menu, as opposed to hard subtitles that are part of the video stream).

Otherwise I use TMPGEnc Authoring Works (Version 4+), which, after six years of painful DVD authoring with DVD Architect, Adobe Encore, eDVD, Ulead, and you name it, I tried them all, restored my hope in DVD authoring being simple, logical and powerful. I cant say strong enough what a revolution this software is in simplicity and power for DVD authoring.

  • Could be that you accidentally selected the “Mute all audio”, just as I did the “mute all video” setting in “Options”. If selected, you will not see the mute/solo buttons on the track view/main window activated, but the video/audio will be muted all the same.

I know this is an old thread, but I just struggled with the same bit. My video was greyed out, or disabled, just as if audio tracks were soloed. I could therefore not see any video in the preview window. No button indicator showed this, however, and when I tried to open a new project the settings was the same.

After trying all preferences and settings, I resorted to trying all menu options in Vegas Video. Finally, I came to “options” and “Mute all video”. It must be a relic from the developers that this setting is not linked with the individual solo/mute buttons in the track view.

It was unbelievable frustrating to look for, and I lost two hours of work. I searched again for “mute all video” in google, to see if the solution was present, and I found this entry. That’s why I thought I might add my confirmation, as well as the search words I used in Google, should anyone else struggle with this stupid omission in Vegas and do their own googling.

Thanks for the follow-up. While I would not at all be surprised if the error rests with Windows permissions, I have full control over this particular key. So unfortunately, the error must also be elsewhere.

I exported the Media Generator files to pngs, on VASST UltimateS edit panel, minding that the Vegas video preview window is set to best and fullsize. It was the only option to save my Media Generator subtitles, as the MG files are “virtual” and hence impossible to save as AVIs in the otherwise handy “Copy media with project” option under save as. I could try to render, but Vegas would crash each time, in addition to creating one long avi file for my 300 subtitles that I would have to cut. There is a script for saving cut media in vegas, but I preferred the export png option.

Anyway, having markers at each subtitle, it was easy to tell UltimateS to take a snapshot at each marker, soloing the subtitle tracks in Vegas. You can use the trial version of for this, but its a handy program to have permanently. It was an extremely boring job to replace manually the 300 or so Media Generator files with the pngs, not least to correct them when I found errors. Perhaps a media replacement script will be developed to handle this in the future.

Its now done, and I do not have any Media Generator subtitles in my project, just the generated pngs that were based on them. Since then, Vegas has not crashed once, though it did crash several times during the exporting of MG files to PNGs. I therefore had to save the project in four parts, exporting pngs individually from each section, instead of all at once.

If someone at Sony is reading this, please have the Media Generator have an option of creating virtual png files instead of virtual video files (would help also for project size), and have an export virtual pngs / replace virtual png with real pngs option somewhere.

And how about to simply enable importing that handy textfile that can be created with “export regions as subtitles”, and paste them as pngs. (This is an option in Excalibur, but this apparently does not allow transparency of text background, nor spreading the subtitles on two lines or even automatically wrap long sentences. A setting with X lines maximum would be handy. I imagine this functionality to be included in future versions of Excalibur though.)

    Hi,

I had the exact same problem. For me the media generator in question is the (Legacy Plug-in) Text / Video Factory Text. I have a raw project with about four hours of footage spanning five hours, using the Legacy text as subtitle engine. (Only one that keeps left justified left, as opposed to the “Sony Text” that adjusts placement based on length of sentence, or the pimped but annoying “Pro Type Titler” (Also changes the text location based on input). Neither offer an opaque background that extends a couple of mm outside the text to make text clearer on video background.(Sony, please fix all this. Its v8, for crying out loud.

Nearly two-thirds of the way in the subtitling process, Vegas started crashing with a “Sony Vegas Pro 8.0, Version 8.0c (Build 260), Exception 0xC0000005 (access violation) READ:0x14EFBC IP:0x781474BC. In Module ‘MSVCR80.dll'” Error. Scrolling down, vfplugs.dll, aviplug.dll and ntdll.dll feature a lot in the error log. Vfplugs.dll i guess is the Video Factory Text Plug-in.

Anyway, I uninstalled my trials of Heroglyph and Boris red, In case they were to blame, and reinstalled to first earlier versions of Vegas, getting the com Object error message, and continued to the present version with the same. I then reinstalled both Heroglyph and Boris Red trial versions, and the Com error went away. I suspect it was Boris Red that provoked the error.

My current problem with Vegas crashing is not solved, but I am experimenting with Excalibur snapshots and VASST Ultimate S Edit to export the apparent video (as opposed to still) subtitles to pngs. For now, vegas still crashes, but I do not get the Com error anymore. Googling the error, it seems like it is a Sony Vegas 8 Pro error, that I hope will disapear with the next version. Will keep posted on progress.
