February 5, 2009 at 12:43 amWhat version of Vegas was the veg file created with? If it was version 8 then I would try reinstalling. Something is not right with the media generators.

Not that I know of. 🙁 I would contact Sony Tech support.

April 7, 2009 at 11:05 amHi,
I had the exact same problem. For me the media generator in question is the (Legacy Plug-in) Text / Video Factory Text. I have a raw project with about four hours of footage spanning five hours, using the Legacy text as subtitle engine. (Only one that keeps left justified left, as opposed to the “Sony Text” that adjusts placement based on length of sentence, or the pimped but annoying “Pro Type Titler” (Also changes the text location based on input). Neither offer an opaque background that extends a couple of mm outside the text to make text clearer on video background.(Sony, please fix all this. Its v8, for crying out loud.
Nearly two-thirds of the way in the subtitling process, Vegas started crashing with a “Sony Vegas Pro 8.0, Version 8.0c (Build 260), Exception 0xC0000005 (access violation) READ:0x14EFBC IP:0x781474BC. In Module ‘MSVCR80.dll'” Error. Scrolling down, vfplugs.dll, aviplug.dll and ntdll.dll feature a lot in the error log. Vfplugs.dll i guess is the Video Factory Text Plug-in.
Anyway, I uninstalled my trials of Heroglyph and Boris red, In case they were to blame, and reinstalled to first earlier versions of Vegas, getting the com Object error message, and continued to the present version with the same. I then reinstalled both Heroglyph and Boris Red trial versions, and the Com error went away. I suspect it was Boris Red that provoked the error.
My current problem with Vegas crashing is not solved, but I am experimenting with Excalibur snapshots and VASST Ultimate S Edit to export the apparent video (as opposed to still) subtitles to pngs. For now, vegas still crashes, but I do not get the Com error anymore. Googling the error, it seems like it is a Sony Vegas 8 Pro error, that I hope will disapear with the next version. Will keep posted on progress.

April 16, 2009 at 12:37 pmI exported the Media Generator files to pngs, on VASST UltimateS edit panel, minding that the Vegas video preview window is set to best and fullsize. It was the only option to save my Media Generator subtitles, as the MG files are “virtual” and hence impossible to save as AVIs in the otherwise handy “Copy media with project” option under save as. I could try to render, but Vegas would crash each time, in addition to creating one long avi file for my 300 subtitles that I would have to cut. There is a script for saving cut media in vegas, but I preferred the export png option.
Anyway, having markers at each subtitle, it was easy to tell UltimateS to take a snapshot at each marker, soloing the subtitle tracks in Vegas. You can use the trial version of for this, but its a handy program to have permanently. It was an extremely boring job to replace manually the 300 or so Media Generator files with the pngs, not least to correct them when I found errors. Perhaps a media replacement script will be developed to handle this in the future.
Its now done, and I do not have any Media Generator subtitles in my project, just the generated pngs that were based on them. Since then, Vegas has not crashed once, though it did crash several times during the exporting of MG files to PNGs. I therefore had to save the project in four parts, exporting pngs individually from each section, instead of all at once.
If someone at Sony is reading this, please have the Media Generator have an option of creating virtual png files instead of virtual video files (would help also for project size), and have an export virtual pngs / replace virtual png with real pngs option somewhere.
And how about to simply enable importing that handy textfile that can be created with “export regions as subtitles”, and paste them as pngs. (This is an option in Excalibur, but this apparently does not allow transparency of text background, nor spreading the subtitles on two lines or even automatically wrap long sentences. A setting with X lines maximum would be handy. I imagine this functionality to be included in future versions of Excalibur though.)

Actually, Excalibur’s Quick Lables DOES allow transparency of the text background. That’s one of the options on the screen. You are correct that it does not currently break long strings of text up into multiple lines, though.

May 19, 2009 at 10:59 pmI had a similar error message (without Vegas bailing out, just a component problem) when using the (old fashioned) Insert-> ‘Text Media’ feature. (I’ve posted this in response to a similar ‘COM error’ thread.
The problem has been resolved for me by trawling for other people having COM issues. Try giving full control permissions for “Administrators” using the RegEDIT tool to change permissions on the folder key “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesEventlogSecurity”. Vegas Pro 8 and the demo of Vegas Pro 9 were both aided by this fix. I’d previously given up on installing this for when I’m using my wife’s PC but my ambition to demo VP9 encouraged me to try harder!
Right mouse this folder in regedit. Confirm Administrators is ticked for FULL CONTROL, if it isn’t – this might fix all your troubles!
Not sure how Windows gets into a state where you can’t control this resource even while you are logged in as an Administrator. Also, YMMV – and only go into regedit if you feel competent that you could change ANYTHING you alter back by yourself please.

May 26, 2009 at 6:23 amThanks for the follow-up. While I would not at all be surprised if the error rests with Windows permissions, I have full control over this particular key. So unfortunately, the error must also be elsewhere.

June 1, 2010 at 7:05 amHi,
As I read your posts I saw you had the same problem with Vegas Pro 8 like I have now.
Actually we have been using Vegas Pro for 2 years on win vista, but last week I installed this app to an other pc and I can’t insert text media for ex. (And get media generator error message.)
And didn’t find the solution.
You described a permission modification in the regedit.
Could you tell it to me deeply how should I fix my machine this way?I can reach the regedit and the path you mentioned but how can I exactly modify permission of the dir?
Thanks

June 2, 2010 at 7:27 amHi,
This is now a while ago I had this problem, but reading the thread again reminded me that the error, as far as I could see, rested with Vegas, and its ability to handle subtitling on long projects rather than using them sparingly as titles for names, places etc. I would not know if Vegas has fixed this in its new version, though I would doubt it.
As far as your question is concerned, you go open Regedit from the start menu, or simply enter Regedit in the “run” menu, navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ Eventlog \ Security folder.
Right click the folder, and you will see an option of “Permissions…” You will then see usernames in the top box, and their corresponding access in the bottom box. Verify that they are full access. But, like I said, for me I already had full control, and so the solution for me laid elsewhere.
Subtitling remains a nightmare in Vegas, and it is for me the single biggest problem with an otherwise fantastic software. I abhor the next time a client will ask me for a project that requires hard subtitles, as opposed to the soft that can be added in SonyVegas DVD Architect. This software is a pain to work with, and I would only use it for adding soft subtitles (ie, subtitles that can be added in the DVD menu, as opposed to hard subtitles that are part of the video stream).
Otherwise I use TMPGEnc Authoring Works (Version 4+), which, after six years of painful DVD authoring with DVD Architect, Adobe Encore, eDVD, Ulead, and you name it, I tried them all, restored my hope in DVD authoring being simple, logical and powerful. I cant say strong enough what a revolution this software is in simplicity and power for DVD authoring.
