That mp4 could be anything—H.264, AVI, MKV, etc. Is it camera original or encoded already from another format? Find the original and flip it to ProRes. Even the best spec’d computer may not play it efficiently in Resolve.
Try using an EDL from Avid to gather your media, then use the AAF to conform it. For some reason Resolve seems to work better when it doesn’t have to do two things at once…
ProRes HQ is way overkill for editing or grading h.264 at 24Mbs. Even ProRes LT is 81Mbs, but ProRes 422 is a good choice if it makes you feel better. Plus I know that my Fox delivery spec for output to HDCAM-SR is ProRes 422 (and this is for Red and Alexa originated material).

Also, I found that adding the raw files to the media pool before bringing in the AAF was more reliable. Use the EDL from Avid to do this. The only box checked in the Load AAF dialog box should be use sizing information.
