  • [Kory Lidstrom] “Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0

    Version 9.0a (Build 85)”

Well, the latest version of Movie Studio 9 is 9.0b and the README states:

    • Fixed a bug that could cause a crash when rendering to some AVCHD formats.

so there are definitely rendering bugs in 9.0a that 9.0b might fix. I would update your software to the latest 9.0 version b.

[Kory Lidstrom] “I’m in a PC running 64-bit Windows 7 with 8 gigs or RAM, so I don’t think it’s a memory issue.”

It could absolutely be a memory issue because Movie Studio 9 is 32-bit so it can’t see your 8 gigs of memory. It only sees 2 gigs. Movie Studio 9 was designed for Windows XP or Vista and while it should run fine on Windows 7, I’m guessing that this 9 year old program (created in 2008) might be having a difficult time with video formats that didn’t exist when it was created. So depending on your source files, this may be a problem that cannot be fixed.

One option is to download the latest Movie Studio 13 trial and see if it has the same problem. BTW, Movie Studio 13 is 64-bit and can use all of your 8 gigs of memory. If it does, it may pay to upgrade.

[Chris Babbitt] “One of the codecs I am looking for are the XDCAM codecs, and they are not at any of those locations.”

Have you tried manually installing Apple Pro Video Formats 2.0.4? That has support for XDCAM EX / HD / HD422 in it. Not sure if it will install without having pre-requisite software installed but it’s worth a try.

[Paula Saints] “If I upgrade, will I keep all my preferences, plugins etc. ?”

No, not by a long shot! Some script plug-ins will stop working. Some can be upgraded. You will probably have to manually copy preferences like window layouts. It will not be painless.

[Chris Babbitt] “I have the codecs. I just need to know where to find them and how to copy them from the old machine to the new.”

Well Warren Eig already said to check here:

    Macintosh HD/Library/QuickTime
    Macintosh HD/System/Library/QuickTime

    I also have codecs here:

    Macintosh HD/Library/Video/Professional Video Workflow Plug-Ins

Not sure what codec you are looking for but those are the three places I’ve found codecs on my Mac.

  • There is no way that this wouldn’t work unless you have some sort of pointer to something inside the project that you are changing.

    Are you using nested projects?

[Chris Babbitt] “For right now, I am using Clipwrap and Quicktime. I have Quicktime 7 on the system, but it doesn’t come with the pro codecs.”

Why don’t you buy Compressor then? That will get you the Pro codecs that you need.

  • If you make the copies outside of Vegas Pro using the Windows Explorer, Vegas should only save the one project that you are editing and have no idea that the others even exist. In other words, don’t use Save As in Vegas, just copy and rename them on the file system yourself.

  • [andy patterson] “…the bat shit crazy device below is the result of Apple not offering a work station for their customers who want it. “

That actually looks like a practical device with one possible flaw. Hot air rises and the Mac Pro was designed to have the air flow in the same direction up and out of the case. I wonder if internal hot spots are formed within because the Mac Pro is mounted sideways? In an effort to also make their designs silent, I’m sure the fans spin just fast enough to aid the natural upward flow of heat which that design defeats.

Still I think it’s great that people who care about the Pro industry are coming up with ideas to make Apple’s products appeal to the Pro market even if Apple doesn’t seem to want to. The Game-Changing OWC DEC which claims to “Make MacBooks ‘Pro’ Again” is another great example. I would buy of of these in a heart-beat if I had a new 2016 MacBook Pro because to me, having the proper I/O always available is far more important than how thin my laptop is (which I could care less about).

Still would have been better if Apple left a USB and SD Card Reader port available on the device. I have a 2015 MacBook Pro and will probably keep it for a very, very, very long time because it has a USB and SD Card Reader port of which I use both daily. IMHO there is no need for a laptop to be any thinner. Seriously, have you ever heard one person complain that their MacBook Pro wasn’t thin enough? Does anyone sit at an Apple announcement event and the buzz around you is all about how people hope it will be thinner? NO! But everyone is complaining about loosing their i/o ports. It just boggles my mind. Why bother having a “Pro” line if you’re not going to design it for “Pro” use? Let the base MacBook be thin enough to disappear, who cares. Let the Pro line differentiate itself by actually having features that the Pro market cares about.

But as you all pointed out… Apple doesn’t design products for their customers; they design them for themselves and then try and convince customers that this is what they always wanted. Apple is in some kind of “thin is better” bubble that they just can’t get out of. (anyone have a pin that can burst it and free them?) lol

Why don’t you download the trial of MAGIX Vegas Pro 14? It is supposed to have native QuickTime support.

The QuickTime support in Vegas Pro 13 and earlier was definitely 32-bit.

  • [Jason Tunbridge] “…the PNG file probably had a little less clarity (at least to my eye). “

Yea, that’s to be expected. The Animation codec is designed for keep computer animation crisp and clear. Glad it all worked out for you.
