HALP!! Rendering error is KILLING ME. Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0

Likely it’s a problem with some media in the project. You need to find out where the render is going bad.

Narrow down the problem.

Render about 1/3 of the project — if it goes, do the next 1/3 — and then the last to find the spot that is going bad.

Keep narrowing until you have the area that is bad .. replace or repair the media — or whatever appears to be the problem.

I repeat. Narrow down the problem. If you can’t get any part of your project to render, then test render other media.

If nothing at all will render — even something very simple — then, uninstall and re-install Vegas ..

Paul, can you gain any insight from the error message I posted?

The project goes bad instantly — within one second — when I try to render to 1280 X 720.. If I scale down the project properties to VERY low res, it will render about 20% of it before crashing.

The whole video is only three minutes long! It does have lots and lots of splits into small clips as I edited out vocal pauses and whatnot. Not sure if that’s the issue?

I did a test render of some stuff with no issue.

I guess I can try uninstalling and re-installing. That won’t cause an issue, will it?

Also, I just got my hands on a copy of Vegas Movie Studio 11. I know it’s older, but it’s two steps newer than the 9.0 I’m currrently using. Is it possible that a newer version might alleviate the problem? If so, can you import a 9.0 project into 11.0?

I am not expert at reading the error messages. It seems like a memory error. Do you have any reason to believe your system has problems? Is Vegas all that is going wrong? What was your last system restore point? Do you suspect a virus or Malware? Any new hardware recently installed? Drivers?

YOu can uninstall and re-install Vegas. It should not cause any problems — unless you have system problems in general.

It would be ok to install Version 11 .. You don’t have to uninstall Version 9 to do it. They should both run on the same machine. Its worth a try. The project should open in Version 11.

THe way to narrow things down is to test. You say you can render other projects ok. THIS IS GOOD. This seems to indicate its something specific to the one .veg file. Not a system problem. Not a Vegas corruption problem in general.

Most of the time these things are MEDIA problems. Test render the media in a fresh project. It could be a single still image that can cause things like this.

Can you make a project with just the first event of your bad project and render it to the same template which keeps crashing? Think how you can test. How can you narrow this problem down. Keep reducing the elements of your project for testing until it will render.

Is it Vegas — the media? — my system? How do you rule things out?

I’ll see what I can figure out. FWIW, I’m in a PC running 64-bit Windows 7 with 8 gigs or RAM, so I don’t think it’s a memory issue.

Well, the latest version of Movie Studio 9 is 9.0b and the README states:

• Fixed a bug that could cause a crash when rendering to some AVCHD formats.

so there are definitely rendering bugs in 9.0a that 9.0b might fix. I would update your software to the latest 9.0 version b.

It could absolutely be a memory issue because Movie Studio 9 is 32-bit so it can’t see your 8 gigs of memory. It only sees 2 gigs. Movie Studio 9 was designed for Windows XP or Vista and while it should run fine on Windows 7, I’m guessing that this 9 year old program (created in 2008) might be having a difficult time with video formats that didn’t exist when it was created. So depending on your source files, this may be a problem that cannot be fixed.

One option is to download the latest Movie Studio 13 trial and see if it has the same problem. BTW, Movie Studio 13 is 64-bit and can use all of your 8 gigs of memory. If it does, it may pay to upgrade.
