    Hi All,

I put a post regarding this problem last week, I have not long bought “Sony Vegas movie studio HD 9” and as I had just bought a new video camera “Nikon”that uses a SD card I was told that the sony Vegas was the program to get for my editing
    .
The problem started when I loaded it on I could not get any sound, No problems if I loaded it on Windows movie maker so I decided to get a computer expert in and to hell with the cost , After he had a look and looking at other peoples questions and answers regarding Sony Vegas he told that the Sony program I had was not compatible to handle MOV files that my Nikon camera produced he told me that it was a known problem and Sony was looking into fixing the problem.

What now pisses me off why dose not Sony say that there editing system can not handle MOV files I feel I have waisted my money buying Sony Vegas and now it’s a matter of when or if they will they fix the problem?

Not all “editing” programs can accept all file formats. Vegas handles a TON of formats, and more than may others, in the past I had to convert .MOV files from Nikons using Cineform….I thought that Vegas 10 PRO now handles most .mov files as well. You have the Movie Studio HD version that may support less file formats and I think (could be wrong) that SMS HD is now up to version 10…may want to check at Sony’s website….good luck!

You can’t really expect a program that is 2 generations old to support the most bleeding edge new formats.

Try Vegas MS 11 and you might have better luck.

Well HD Studio Platinum 11 handles H.264mov very well out of a Canon 5D Mark II better than Adobe .

As Joe said… the version of Vegas Movie Studio that you bought is 2 generations old. You should be mad at yourself for buying old outdated software. Download the trial of Vegas Movie Studio HD 11 and it should handle you camera files without a problem. If it does… Buy it!

mov is a container. the codec that it contains makes a real difference.

You’re right it’s Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 11. I could not check the site because it was down for maintenance last night when I made the post.

Well… Sony does give you a very generous 30-day free trial so if you didn’t try it before you bought it, you kind of have no one to blame here.

I strongly recommend that you try any software you are planning to buy because I’m guessing that your Nikon camera produces non-standard MOV files that no software on a PC is going to be able to edit.

In the future, if you own a PC, don’t buy a camera that produces Apple QuickTime files. It is usually nothing but headaches.

Out of curiosity, did you download the trial to confirm this?
Sony’s tech specs page for it says “New! Improved QuickTime AVC decoding for DSLR cameras” and list QuickTime (i.e. MOV) as a supported import format.

$65 for a version upgrade is too expensive?

[paul belter] “mov is a container. the codec that it contains makes a real difference.”

Absolutely, and that’s part of the problem here. AVC/H.264 is far too broad a specification for any one vendor to support. That’s one of the reason’s AVCHD was created but still image camera manufacturers don’t seem to want to use this for some reason. Sony has been focusing on Canon’s flavor of AVC/H.264 to be compatible with what they write to the MOV container but the original poster has Nikon and who knows what they are writing to the container.

Consumers don’t understand this. They buy a camera that shoots video and expect any software that edits video to work. Unfortunately, video is not video. There are just too many formats. If consumers would refuse to buy video cameras that didn’t conform to AVCHD all of this would go away. (but, unfortunately they won’t and so it won’t) 🙁

I used to have Sony Vegas studio HD on my old computer, I bought it on line but my computer crashed and lost it , I down loaded it again but could not find the code number to activate it I email Sony but they said they could not find any record of me having bought Sony Vegas.
It was strange when I bought it again 3 weeks ago as soon as I clicked on the buy now tab all my old name and address came up.

The reason I bought the same one was I was used to it and was very happy at the time
