It sounds like you had a codec on your old system that is not on your new hard drive. I would get a copy of GSpot and drop the file into it and it will tell you which codec is missing from your system.

Not sure which light effect you are referring to. There are some colored lights in the beginning that can easily be done by compositing some generated noise media over the video and then there were flashes of white which can be done with compositing fade to color envelopes or even a Flash transition.

If you’ve got a lot of stills and plan to replace the DV then going with HD now may make sense for you. The DV is just not going to look very good. There are products that claim to uprez SD to HD but they usually take a long time to render and while they look better than SD that has not been treated, they are not the quality of real HD footage. The details you would normally have in HD footage simply aren’t there to start with and can’t be added.

Second, I’m not lawyer and this should not be taken as legal advice. If you should need legal advice, ask a lawyer.
Third, I believe it’s there to cover themselves in case someone uses their software to pirate movies. At least they can say that they said the software was not to be used for that purpose and that the pirate was in violation of the EULA so Sony cannot be held accountable.
Fourth, you mileage may vary, void where prohibited by law, do not try this at home.

I would not create projects with any more resolution than your source. If you are shooting SD then your projects should be SD. Using an HD project and then downconverting to SD will only make your footage look worse. It is what it is, and in the future you can deal with what it is i.e., buy a plug-in that scales SD to HD or simply use the SD as a PIP in it’s original resolution. Don’t try and make it something it’s not. Many people have entered film festivals with DV SD and done very well. It’s all about the “story”.

You could use the Quicktime Animation codec. As the name implies, it is designed for compressing animation and does a really good job of it. One of the nice things is it supports 32-bit with alpha channel in case your want to use animations as overlays.
If you are happy with Cineform it should maintain good quality even after repeated renders. There’s nothing wrong with sticking with that.

Sounds like a WMP11 problem to me. The random patches are a result of not interpreting the stream correctly. Maybe it’s a DivX issue with WMP11.

I was going to suggest that you might want to sell the Dazzle on eBay and get something like an ADS Tech AV Link or a Canopus ADVC-110. I have two ADS Tech AV Links and they work well. I also have a Conopus ADVC-300 (one model up from the 110) and I bought an ADS Tech Instant DVD which captures direct to MPEG2. I use this to transfer old VHS tapes that I don’t want to edit. It just captures direct to MPEG2 and I burn directly to DVD. For things I want to edit I use my ADS Tech AV Link or ADVC-300 which captures to a DV AVI files.

I use Paint Shop Pro 9. It’s not free but that’s what I do all of my image editing in. I have a 1440×960 crop set up that I can resize and still maintain the aspect. This allows me to select the area that I’m interested in and know that when I resize I will not get distortion (i.e., it will resize and maintain aspect).
That’s the problem with batch resizing, if your images are not the aspect of the video they will get squashed or stretched. In that case you want a program that will just resize in one dimension so that the aspect is maintained. I don’t know if InfranView can do that but that’s what you want.
