The AAC codec only affects the audio so it would not cause video problems. Did you set your project properties to 30fps progressive? That’s what this camera uses. Perhaps the A-HD is different enough from the Go-HD that it’s files don’t work in Vegas?
What you have described sounds like the way Vegas acts when it edits DivX files (which are a flavor of mp4). Perhaps the A-HD files just aren’t compatible with Vegas.

The Dolby Digital encoder comes with DVD Architect. If you only have Vegas Pro 8 and don’t have DVD Architect then you won’t have it.

HD is the same for NTSC and PAL. Only the frame rates are different.

I don’t remember suggesting a 1.78 ratio? What makes you think that your Canon A620 shoots with a 1.3333 aspect ratio? I’ve never heard of this. All digital cameras shoot with a PAR of 1.0. Only camcorders have a notion of non square pixels because that is a video concept. Only recently have photo editors like Photoshop added view compensation for images coming from video with non-square pixels but regular photo cameras all shoot square pixels.

Actually just the opposite. Non-square pixels only affect the width. If you needed to compensate you would resize the width of the image to make it square again.

The larger size will take more memory and longer to render because Vegas still has to scale it but if it’s the best to your eyes then I say go for it. In the end, you gotta be happy with what you produce.
If your project takes too long to render or you start running out of resources while editing then cut the size down a bit more. HD is 1920×1080 so you might try resizing them to HD size which we know Vegas handles well.

Wow Dave that is odd.
Are you sure you have Quantize to Frames ON? That is the only thing that would allow splits at non-frame boundaries. Also, try setting your timeline ruler to SMPTE Non-Drop (29.97 fps, Video). That is the default for 29.97 in Vegas.
If it is only seen in certain MXF files it could be a problem with how Vegas is reading them (which would be a bug) or it could be how Vegas calculates the .97 of a frame over time which is why I suggested changing your ruler from Time & Frames to SMPTE Non-Drop.

If you are editing with Ignore Event Grouping on then that may very well be your problem. That setting should normally be off unless you are specifically shifting the video or audio out of sync on purpose. You should also always have Quantize to Frames enabled as well if you are working with video. I have never had any audio sync problems with 29.97 video. Does this only happen with MXF files?

PPI is irrelevant to video. It is a print measurement. The rule of thumb for video is to double the output resolution if you plan to pan and zoom the image. Otheriwse use the output resolution. Since an NTSC DVD will have 655×480 square pixels you should use 1310×960 if you pan to zoom into the image at all. Some people don’t take the square pixels into account and double 720×480 to 1440×480. That’s acceptable too.
Remember DVD video is only 655×480 and 655×480 = 314,400 pixels. That’s 0.3 mega pixels! So you are correct that giving Vegas a 10 MP image and asking it to resize it to 0.3 MP is asking a lot. Do that in a dedicate image editor with a bicubic resize as you were planning.

Track Motion is the best way to go. Green screen will show one picture through all of the frames and I don’t think you want that. If you want individual picture you’ll need to position them using Pan/Crop or Track Motion or a combination of both. Use Track Motion to resize and position them and Pan / Crop to fit them perfectly to the frame’s size.

Use the View menu to turn any windows you’d like to see on or off. You can also use View | Window Layouts | Load Default Layout to get the default layout back.

If you plan to bring them back into the timeline then AVI is the format you want. It will maintain the highest quality.
