When I import and .MOV file from my video camera I can only get the video but no audio. Why? Do I need some kind of codec or does vegas just not do .MOV? I really need this to work. This is bugging me. All in the timeline it shows the video clip on top and the audio on bottom with no pointy things…just a straight line. Why cant I get sound?

What version of Vegas do you have?
Do you have QuickTime installed on your computer?

What brand of camera is it?
If it’s a GO-HD or similar inexpensive camera, try this workaround to get the files into Vegas.
You will have to buy QuickTime Pro but it’s less than $30.

If it’s not a GO-HD file, open the file in the Quicktime player and use Ctrl+I to Show the Movie Inspector. Look at what Format the file is in. This will tell you what codec is being used. Chances are this codec is not installed on your PC. You’ll need to find it and install it.

I would start with the CD’s that came with your camera. Most people ignore them but chances are, everything you need to support your camera is on them. If not, go to the manufacturer’s web site and look in the downloads section. Don’t. under any circumstance, install one of the “all-codecs” packages that are floating around the Internet. They will just mess your computer up and could very likely contain spyware and Trojans. Just find the one codec you need and install it.

After all that it is still possible that the audio is in a format that Vegas doesn’t support (like AC3). In this case you may have to convert the audio to another format that Vegas can edit.

Then you need to purchase Quicktime Pro and follow the instructions in the link that Mike provided. Otherwise Vegas will not be able to read these files.

Well now I got quicktime pro and an AAC codec. I still dont get sound when I try to edit the vids in vegas. I do have a good video converter but still, it makes the picture quality worse if I convert the videos (I use prism). Anything else I can do?

I’m not sure what ‘prism’ is or what it has to do with this but did you follow the instructions in Mike’s link: (Using GO-HD files in Sony Vegas Pro 8)? You were supposed to process the files with Quicktime Pro and that’s it.

There was no need to install an AAC codec and, in fact, that may add to the problem if you are using codecs that Vegas doesn’t support. I would uninstall any AAC codec you may have installed.

Just process the files with Quicktime Pro. This does not, I repeat DOES NOT alter the video in any way! Follow the instructions in the link (it uses pass-through mode for video and only process the audio)

ok well i did this and I got it working. I exported the video as an MP4 like it said in the directions and then imported into vegas. It shows the video and sound but the picture quality is awful and it freezes and there are red spots…. Is that because of my AAC codec?

The AAC codec only affects the audio so it would not cause video problems. Did you set your project properties to 30fps progressive? That’s what this camera uses. Perhaps the A-HD is different enough from the Go-HD that it’s files don’t work in Vegas?

What you have described sounds like the way Vegas acts when it edits DivX files (which are a flavor of mp4). Perhaps the A-HD files just aren’t compatible with Vegas.
