    Hi,

I got some footage from the new Sony EX-3 cameras. 1920×1080 progressive 29,97fps. I created a new project with the above settings, put the mxf files on the timeline, but after a bit of editing, I noticed that some of the video events show that they aren’t in-line with their audio (I Ignore Event Grouping). This would be no problem, if I accidentally moved a video away from it’s audio, but the difference Sony tells me, is + or – 0.00 . So I took a closer look. Every video I touch, it snaps to whole frames on the timeline, which means that about a half-a-frame gap is created between the touched video event and one of the other events next to it.

This is the first I worked with 29.97 video, and so far I am pretty mad. Nice 25fps is so easy….

So what’s the problem? Project is at 29.97 progressive, timeline is showing Frames and Seconds. Basically, if I wanted to make sure that there aren’t half-frame gaps between my video events, I would have to resize ALL video events in order for them to snap to each other without any half-frame gap.

How have you guys been working with Sony Vegas 8 on 29.97 videos??

    Thanks
    David

If you are editing with Ignore Event Grouping on then that may very well be your problem. That setting should normally be off unless you are specifically shifting the video or audio out of sync on purpose. You should also always have Quantize to Frames enabled as well if you are working with video. I have never had any audio sync problems with 29.97 video. Does this only happen with MXF files?

    Hi John,

Thanks for the quick reply. 🙂

My problem isn’t audio unsyncing really. The problem is half-frame gaps appearing at the edges of the video events.

This is how an mxf looks like on the timeline, with the cursor standing on a frame.

See how the end of the video event itself is between 2 adjacent frames?

And if I resize the end of the video event to the frame that the cursor was standing on, I get a half-second gap.

And this happens THE INSTANT I move the video part of an event. EVEN if I DO NOT move the actual event ANYWHERE, just move the video one track up or down from it’s original track.

It could be that my mxf files are damaged, because I only noticed this in some of the mxf files on the timeline. Been editing for a good 2-3 years on daily basis, but I haven’t seen this problem before.

    Wow Dave that is odd.

Are you sure you have Quantize to Frames ON? That is the only thing that would allow splits at non-frame boundaries. Also, try setting your timeline ruler to SMPTE Non-Drop (29.97 fps, Video). That is the default for 29.97 in Vegas.

If it is only seen in certain MXF files it could be a problem with how Vegas is reading them (which would be a bug) or it could be how Vegas calculates the .97 of a frame over time which is why I suggested changing your ruler from Time & Frames to SMPTE Non-Drop.

Quantize to Frames is on, never turned it off. Changed the timeline ruler, didn’t help. At this point, I think this is a bug.
    I’ll investigate this further.

    Thanks
