  • What kind of files are these? Are they in a format that Movie Studio supports? Note: Vegas doesn’t support DivX or Xvid.

Usually if you are missing audio or video it’s because the file is using a video or audio codec that Vegas does not support. You will have to convert the file into a format that Vegas can edit using some other software such as Super(c).

    > 1. How do I burn my edited High definition Video on to a DVD directly from the timeline? Do I need to render and if so, what rendering format I should use?

This may be a Vegas Pro feature that is not available in Movie Studio. See if you have the menu option: Tools | Burn Disc | Blu-ray Disc… If not, then you can’t do it. I’m also not sure if the DVD Architect that comes with Movie Studio supports Blu-ray but if it does, you could burn to regular DVD media.

    > 2. How do I save my edited conents on a media server? What does the media server do and where can I get them? I stay in India. I would certainly be very interested in getting one which I can directly hook on to a TV.

You would still have to render to a format that the media server supports. Something like the Western Digital WD TV HD Media Player should do the trick. There are others if you look around.

    > Version 7.0a (Build 115)

The last version of Vegas 7 was 7.0e. I would start by updating your software to the latest levels.

    > I’m trying to work out the best way to do that in the video.

You do it the same way in video. As long as the people don’t walk in front of the sign, just duplicate the track, use the cookie cutter to isolate a piece of white wall and move the pan/crop on the upper track so that the white wall cut-out is over the sign on the lower track.

  • Hi Daan, Try iZotope RX. I’ve gotten some really good results with audio that was clipped at the mixer input which was well within my recorded levels.

  • > the “stretch” mark option works as expected (NO pilar boxing) only on an HD timeline (not on a SD timeline working with HD)…..

That’s correct. This is because once you place HD media on an SD timeline it is already conformed to SD resolution so there is no stretching. The black bars are in the video. This is why you have to use the stretch option from an HD timeline.

    > so maybe is best to work on an original HD timeline knowing that the final output will be whatever you want ….

    That’s how I work.

    > however, if the final video will be “stretched” (OK just a few pixels) maybe it will be “deformed” (nobody will tell you that) vs. the “cropped” version worked on the SD timeline… am I right ??

Yes, an alternate solution is to drop the HD project into an SD timeline as a nested project and then use Pan/Crop on the one big event to Match Output Aspect. This will crop the whole project instead of stretching.

    > still waiting comments about this….

    You just got ’em. 😉

Vegas will also use the Windows Secondary Display in a dual display system. You would need to set up your video card to make the S-Video look like a secondary monitor to Windows. I don’t know if that’s possible with your card or not. You may not get the output you expect however. You can also use use the OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394/DV option for SD if you have a digital to analog converter like the Canopus ADVC-110/300 or ADS Tech Pyro A/V Link.

    > Is what I am doing something unusual? Is loading back the edited video on to the camcorder to view on a TV not common?

I don’t believe it is very common no. Cameras are usually used for acquisition and not delivery. It’s also not very practical? You will need to keep copying videos to your camera every time you want to watch them and then delete them to make room to record more.

    > In the absence of a blueray burner, how do people view the edited HD video on a HDTV?

You can store about 30 min of HD on regular DVD media. Vegas can do this right from the timeline. You will need a Blu-ray player to play it back. Blue-ray burners and only $299. There is really no excuse not to own one if you want to deliver HD.

    > Is there any other method I can use?

There is no need to mess with shiny plastic discs at all. Get yourself a media server and save your content to that. There are some that plug right into your TV using a local hard drive as well as others that connect wired or wireless to your PC or LAN.

I agree it’s frustrating. You said in your original post that you are using an external USB drive for your files. I would try copying the files to a local hard drive just to rule out that USB port as a potential problem. I’ve had difficulty with USB drives loosing their connection. Is there anything else the error says? Any indication of what caused it? Unfortunately, there is not much to go by.
