Have you tried using FCP X 10.2.2? 10.1.4 is rather old at this point. Perhaps you’re encountering a bug that’s already been fixed?

Too late now since you cut and pasted the other one but I’m sure if you nudged the text track a pixel closer on the Z axis it would have solved your problem. As to why the other events don’t have the same problem it’s anyone’s guess. If tracks and on the same Z plane and one is transparent, I guess Vegas Pro can decide which one it wants to process first. Placing the text in front on the Z axis prevents and guess work.

Rick, Thanks for taking the time to document your steps for us. I’ve used the Temporal Cleaner before and I know it does an excellent job. Also the post you referred to is by John Meyer who is very active in the Vegas Pro community and has done a lot of restoration work. He really knows what he’s talking about and he should… he was the founder of Ventura Software which created the first desktop publishing application Ventura Publisher, so he’s a bit of a legend in the computer industry.
I’ll be using this soon as I start to capture my VHS tapes with an ADVC300. Thanks again for your post!

Yea, I was going to ask if the device came with a capture app but it’s advertised as “works with any app” so they don’t include one. The problem is that VidCap only captures SD and Sony created a new app for HD that only works with Firewire but maybe VidCap will capture whatever you feed it? I don’t have any HD USB cameras to test with.

Your camera shoots 1920×1080 at 25 frames per second not 50. That little “i” stands for “interlaced” which means 50 interlaced “fields” that make up 25 full frames. You should not set anything to 50 fps because you have no source that’s compatible with 50 fps.
Your project should use the HD 1080-50i (1920×1080, 25.000 fps) template and set your Deinterlace Method to Blend Fields. Only if you have a lot of fast movement should you use Interpolate Fields. The bluring might have been caused by using 50 fps which was blending your 25 frames to make new ones so I would start back with Blend Fields at 25 fps and see how it looks first.

DVD’s do not support HD video. You should render using MainConcept MPEG2 with the DVD Architect PAL Widescreen video stream template for video and Dolby Digital AC3 Pro for audio.

I couldn’t help but notice that your text track and graphic track are both in 3D Source Alpha mode. You also have the Opacity at around 50% for the graphic event.
It looks like you’ve pushed the text behind the graphic on the 3D Z plane so that it’s now behind the graphic and showing through it because of the opacity of the graphic.
Open 3D Track Motion and move the text in front of the graphic on the Z axis or the graphic behind the text. Either one should fix your problem.

Someone just asked a similar questions the other day. These looks like Light Leaks. Google for “light leaks” and you’ll find a bunch of plug-ins that do this. Some even comes as media overlays.

I’ve played with VirtualDub a bit many years ago and I remember them having some filters specific to VHS. Which ones did you use that worked the best?

Yes. Also look at the Sepia filter and change that to blue, and the HSL filter will also help you alter colors. Finally, the Color Corrector (Secondary) will allow you to select a color and then change it to another color. That might also help.
