[Val Kotelnikov] “I want to change the aspect ratio back to 4:3 before start working on it.”

Drop it into a 4:3 project, then open Track Motion, disable Lock Aspect Ratio, and drag any corner to fill the 4:3 screen (which will stretch it back).

[Matthew Jeschke] “…you know darn near everything about video editing!”

Yea, my head is filled with lot of stuff… now if I can only remember where I put the car keys. lol 😀

    Thanks for the kind words.

[Matthew Jeschke] “I’m acutally not sure why anybody would bother with the re-sample it really does seem to adversely effect the quality every time I use it.”

That’s because it’s broken. If it were implemented correctly you wouldn’t be saying that. Resample is needed when converting between frame rates that are not multiples of each other. The most popular is film’s 23.976 to NTSC TV’s 29.970 and Vegas does an outstanding job of moving both ways between these two. What’s broken is that “smart resample” is too “dumb” to realize that going from 60-fps to 30-fps only requires dropping every other frame so instead it tries to blend the frames and makes a big mess. This is why people shooting 60p disable it and why I never have to (because I shoot 60i). So having smart resample be the default has never effected me adversely.

[Stefan Schramm] “I poked around some more and had some success with changing the project properties to 32bit floating point. For some reason, this can’t be changed back to 8-bit. It also throws off the white balance.”

Yea, you should never change your project properties to 32-bit floating point unless you are using 10-bit media and really know what you are doing because it has a tendency to really mess things up.

Glad to hear that you got it working again.

It’s all relative Jenn… “one person’s intuitive user interface is another person’s blank screen” 😉 Glad I could help.

January 6, 2016 at 2:27 pm in reply to: Vimeo upload, render two pass …

[lucas pelus] “I do not know if it’s better to upload in 1080p 10-20Mbps or in 720p 10-20Mbps because at the end they re encod in 720p.”

It’s better to upload 720p because you will get higher quality at the same bit rate because the resolution is smaller.

[lucas pelus] “I cannot see difference on my small screen between video in 720 or in 1080.”

…and people watching on their cell phone or tablet won’t be able to tell the difference either. 😉

[lucas pelus] “So i cannot know if the bitrate is enough si I try a render with tthe two pass (10 – 28 Mbps) and the render is in 10 Mbps, that means that 10 Mbps are enough for my video in 1080 ?”

Two pass makes a big difference when you are rendering to low bit rates. At that high a bit rate, two pass isn’t going to show much of a difference.

January 6, 2016 at 2:23 pm in reply to: Which computer do you recomand for editing ?

[lucas pelus] “I tell you i see, HDD 1 To + SSD 128 go. It’s what it’s wrotte on the web site but i don’t know what that’s mean.”

I’m not sure what that means either. It could mean that it’s a hybrid drive with both an SSD+HDD acting as one drive, If it is, that’s fine as well.

[lucas pelus] “To optimize the SSD it’s better to use it as the software system where we install all the software ? And we put the data on the HDD (like the rushs) ?”

Yes, exactly. Keep the OS and applications on the SSD and all of your video media/rushes on the HDD. If it’s a combined hybrid drive then you don’t need to worry about that. Keep everything on the one hybrid drive.

[lucas pelus] “Is that a big difference between : HDD 5400 Tpm and 7200 tpm ?”

Depending on hw many streams of video you are working with, at some point you will notice a difference. For one or two video streams, probably not.

    [lucas pelus] “8go DDR3L and 8 go DDR4 ?”

    No difference.

    [lucas pelus] “Here is what I could buy : Asus – W10 GL752VW-T4004T (1300€) 17,3″, i7-6700HQ, HDD 1To 7200tpm + SSD 128 go, GTX 960M, 8 go DDR4”

That looks like an awesome system for both gaming and video editing.

[lucas pelus] “For SSD here’s what I found : HDD 1TO + SSD 128 go”

If you mean using an SSD for the boot drive and HDD for the data drive that’s a good strategy.

[lucas pelus] “I do not find any ATI GPU … All the laptop i check got a GTX 960m and a i7…”

Yea, that’s the problem. NVIDIA dominates the laptop market. MacBook Pro’s use AMD GPU’s but I wouldn’t recommend one just to run Windows.

[lucas pelus] “Vegas is not my main application, i’m gaming too. Is that so important to get a nvidia GPU ?”

No, it’s not that important. It’s better to have an AMD GPU but not required. The games will play better with NVIDIA anyway.

[Matthew Jeschke] “I’m thinking this is a drive issue? Problem is worse when I use the 7200 RPM capture scratch drive. If I move project to my SSD it’s better but not perfect.”

Part of the problem is CPU/GPU related. Regardless of how fast your storage is, Vegas Pro still needs to blend the frames to make the transition. Your weak AMD CPU is probably the cause here.

You could try using Tools | Selectively Prerender Video… (Shift+M) to pre-render the transitions so that they play back smoothly. This might help.
