Hi Bill, It looks like you are experiencing Kernel Panics which can be from a number of things but usually it’s a bad driver. According to that dump, these are the drivers on your Mac that are NOT from Apple:

I can see that you are using SplashTop display, a Microsoft Mouse, the Soundflower audio driver, LogMeIn sounds driver, CalDigital USB driver, and Metakine Inc. One Periodic – Hands Off!

From looking at that dump, I’m guessing that it’s your CalDigit storage device driver.

Here is the evidence that leads me to this conclusion. The backtrace which shows what code was executing just before the panic lists the CalDigit driver by name.

How about breaking it into two forums? I don’t come here for the debates. I come whenever Apple releases something new like a new MacBook Pro because I know someone will have made a post and others who may have even bought it will comment on how it fits with their workflow. That is probably something I would go to an Apple Talk forum for.

So how about we split this forum into two: One for discussions about the latest Apple products for video production called Apple Talk and another for debates on the merits of different NLE’s NLE Debates?

I believe what you said was:

Which does not imply that YOU are changing the focus of the forum but that THE FORUM has changed focus over the years (…and it has).

Judging from the replies to your post, I would say that the forum “regulars” do not agree that what we do here is “Talk” about “Apple” but rather “Debate” about “NLEs.

I have to agree with them. We are still debating, the topics are not only about FCP X, nor are they only about Apple (there are discussions about running Resolve on a PC) so changing the title to Apple Talk bears little resemblance to the current contents of forum and I also agree with others that Apple Talk sounds like a place to talk about iOS, iPhones, and iPads (oh my!) since Apple dropped the name “Computer” from their name but this forums is only concerned with computers and NLE software (…a now tiny subset of the mighty Apple empire).

So Ron (or Tim) let me ask… What do you think the purpose of this forum has changed to? Is it just to “Talk” about “Apple” as the new name would imply?

BTW, I vote for NLE Debates which I believe is more in line with what we do here.

This usually happens when you set the DPI on your Windows fonts beyond 100%. Have you set the DPI on your Windows fonts to anything other than the default (100%)? Messing with Windows fonts and DPI is the usual cause for windows being cut off like that. The other is graphics card drivers.

I use TechSmith Camtasia to create all of my Boris TV tutorials and I’ve never had any problems. Camtasia has it’s own capture codec which is highly optimized for capturing computer generated images like screen captures. They have a free trial so you have nothing to loose.

That is very odd, usually reads and faster than writes. It could be that writes are being cached and once you push enough data through to fill the cache they will slow down?

Sad to say but I find the plug-ins for the Mac in general, and Final Cut Pro X in particular, far better than what’s available on the PC (which is one of the reason’s I switched).

I have seen different manufacturers “interpretation” of AVCHD differ. The problem is that MPEG4/AVC is an extremely broad specification and AVCHD was an attempt to subset it to make it easier to get compatibility but unfortunately, even within the smaller AVCHD subset there are differences because camera manufacturers interpret the spec differently.

One test you can do is record 29.97 from the same camera and see if that plays back smoother. It very well could be because you are pushing twice as many frames through at 59.94 and that is what’s causing the stutter. You said that switching to Better Performance solved the problem. Dropping frames is something the Better Performance uses to get smoother playback so it may be the frame rate. If 29.97 still stutters, then it’s probably an incompatibility with that camera’s files. Just transcode them.

Just to give you a sample of what other tools can do…

I used CrumplePop EchoRemover on this in Final Cut Pro X. I literally just dropped the plug-in on the audio, pressed the Remove Echo button and that was it. 2 seconds. No tweaking. Done.
