  • [Tom Edwards] “And to hook up the monitor? A second video card?”

You could use an external card or device like ones from AJA and Blackmagic Design but you can also use a single video card. I use an AMD Radeon HD 7950 and use the Windows Secondary Display option in Vegas Pro. The help file in Vegas Pro lists all of the devices it supports.

[Rob Cioffi] “I’ve seen job listings for After Effects, Premiere, Avid and even Final Cut but never Vegas.”

I guess you answered your own question: If you can’t find any jobs requiring Vegas Pro skills then it’s not a very marketable skill is it?

Yes, you might find some jobs but the majority will require skills in one of the top three (Avid, Final Cut Pro, & Adobe CC) as you have seen. If you are looking to make a living as an editor for hire, it’s best to learn one or more of the top three (the more the better). If you are just looking to work on your own and deliver final productions, then Vegas Pro is fine.

  • [Bruce Quayle] “My only clue is that I haven’t been using this computer for editing since I converted to Windows 10, so perhaps that has something to do with the issue.”

I was going to ask “What has changed?” but you just answered that question.

Try re-installing Vegas Pro 11. if that doesn’t work, download the trial of Vegas Pro 13 and see if that fixes the issue. Vegas Pro 11 doesn’t support Windows 10 so it may be time to upgrade Vegas Pro but try a re-install first.

  • [Wayne Waag] “The problem seems to be that you are saving your files as trec rather than avi.”

    +1

If you don’t want to edit with Camtasia’s editor, then don’t record TREC files. Record AVI instead.

January 31, 2016 at 1:19 am in reply to: Building proxies for Atomos Shogun 4K footage

[Tim Neighbors] “I’m using Vegas 13 on Windows 7 64bit with Vegasaur 2.1. The Shogun footage is 4K Prores 422.”

Why aren’t you using the proxy workflow that’s already built into Vegas Pro 13? Is that not working for you?

Personally, my advice would be to buy a iMac Retina 5K and edit with Final Cut Pro X if you want to record 4K with the Atomos Shogun. That devices was developed specifically to make it easy for Mac editors to work directly with Apple ProRes 422 footage without transcoding. If you want to stick with a PC, you should buy a recording device that’s PC friendly. You’re just making it harder on yourself, but I understand you already bought the device.

Try using Vegas Pro 13’s proxy workflow.

  • There are two places that the GPU is used. One is rendering the FX on the timeline, and the other is encoding the video to a file. While the MainConcept AVC encoder won’t work with the 390 for encoding, the rendering of FX on the timeline will absolutely use the AMD R9 390 GPU so you are still getting GPU acceleration from that card.

If you want to see the difference, turn off GPU Acceleration under Options | Preferences | Video and restart Vegas Pro and time the render. Then turn it back on, restart, and time the render. The second render should be faster regardless of what encoder you use.

[Rob Cioffi] “When I use the Track FX button in the empty track’s header to add an FX it does NOT work.”

Try dragging the Composite node all the way to the left so that it’s fist. This will composite all of the tracks and then apply the FX.

  • [John Lee] “But SOMETIMES I don’t get that prompt. It will ask me over and over again to find the next “missing” file and it is very tedious.”

Isn’t that annoying?!!! I HATE when that happens and wish Sony would fix it. I haven’t nailed down what causes it to happen or how to fix it but I’m pretty sure it’s a bug.

[Wayne Waag] “One thing to be aware of. If you copy multiple projects into the same “archive” folder which use the same assets, Vegas will make make a copy of those assets, in essence duplicating those media files.”

Yes, I would be careful of using Save As with “copy media” for the reason’s Wayne outlined. It’s totally brain dead and will copy the same media over, and over, and over again making a nightmare of a mess to try and unravel.

I use to just move the folder to my archive drive and hope for the best. Honestly, there is not much more you can do since you are not doing anything wrong to cause this bug to rear it’s ugly head.
