If you have the Symphony secondary Color Corrector, you can sample the goofy red and change it to a blue that is similar to the mat blue. Perhaps it will be less visible that way.

[Shane Ross] “Speedgrade…can’t monitor out via AJA or BMD yet, so it’s useless.”
This is not correct. Speedgrade now uses Mercury Transmit in Adobe CC. I use it over my Kona 3 just fine.

Unfortunately, this aspect of Avid is completely non-intuitive, especially if you are coming from other NLE’s. Unless you do a tutorial, take a class or read the manual its unlikely that you will guess how it works.
Much of the effects model is unchanged from the 1990’s, though they have tacked on many new capabilities. If they were designing the UI from the ground up, it would most certainly not work like this.

You have a few choices. Here is the easiest…..
delete the clip you imported including the media.
Let’s try this again….
In the import dialog, change the alpha setting to the opposite of what it is set to now. If its set to “Do Not Invert”, then set it to Invert. If its set to Invert, set it to “Do Not Invert”
If you reimport and now see the graphic as more than just an outline…you are done. Just put the clip on a higher track and the Alpha should be transparent. You do not need to add an effect to it. It should have a Matte Key icon on it already. If it doesn’t, you have the import dialog set to “ignore alpha”
If it still looks incorrect, you may have a graphic with a Premultiplied alpha…which does not work correctly in Avid. You need to go back to the program it was created with and re do it with a Straight alpha.

I would consider doing the AMA/Transcode for pretty much all file based video ingest.
I only use import for the odd file that does not work correctly via AMA.AMA/Transcode usually is several times faster than “legacy” import.

I think that may be a Live Type file. You need Live Type from FInal Cut Studio 2 to have that codec.

Is this an offline/online workflow?
If you edit at low resolution and will need to recapture at high resolution you will have issues…these tapes may not have timecode and may be too fragile for repeated cueing. Not even getting into how inaccurate Umatic is even if it has timecode.
If you want to offline, I’d strongly suggest dubbing to a more robust format…Digibeta for SD or HDCAM, if you desire upconverting. Capture your dubs. You basically have no chance of a successful Upres later, if you don’t do this.

Since nobody has one yet, I can’t say for sure, but I don’t think getting a Mac Pro tube will help much. Poor performance with H264 material is more related to AMA than your computer. On your machine, adobe Premiere Pro CC will edit just fine with it, especially if you put in a qualified GPU.
