Another way to check, if you have a long timeline with lots of tiny clips, where you might miss something…you can put the sequence in a bin by itself, then change your bin settings to show reference clips. This will make all the clips that make up the timeline in the bin. You can then sift for offline clips.

The video displayed on your computer in the source/record monitors (viewer/canvas in FCP) are not meant for critical color. They are just a GUI representation. If you want to know what it really looks like you need to have external monitoring hardware.

Right about the plugins, though FCPX has some secondary color correction built in, Avid doesn’t. Avid hamstrings the color corrector in MC so they can sell you the Symphony option. Which is a $1400 add on unless they reduced it to $700 and I missed it.

I’m an Avid editor and enthusiast, but longtime FCP user as well…however I am not a big fan of FCPX. Just got to be truthful and say your comparison is not all that accurate. Also, have to agree with Shane…Motion is not really like Boris RED aka AvidFX at all.

Try going to User/Shared/AvidMediaComposer/AMA Management/AMA Metadata Folders and delete the folder referring to this file.

If the bad metadata from the file is still there from when you first tried to work with it, it may still fail to work, even if you correct the problem.

Had something similar happen and this did the trick. Not sure if its the same problem with you…but worth a shot.

Managed AMA media means new troubleshooting procedures need to be developed when things go wrong.

The plug in universe for Avid is much smaller than you had with FCP. You won’t see scores of free or inexpensive plugins from independent developers for Avid AVX.

Boris BCC and Sapphire are common plugin suites on Avid systems. BCC comes with Symphony free…you can purchase it for MC. GenArts Sapphire is very expensive.

Avid MC comes with AvidFX, which is really a rebranded version of Boris RED that runs inside Media Composer. There are many preset transitions and a whole lot more included.

You might want to get started with AvidFX, since you already own it.

Not quite sure what you are trying to do…but if you render out something in After Effects that is larger than 1080, you can link to it via Frame Flex and retain its resolution for panning and zooming.

If you need to work in a resolution higher than 1080 or export something larger than 1080, Avid is not the program for you. HD is all it can do.

Frame Flex in MC7 will allow you to pan and zoom on an AMA linked QuickTime animation. Will that do what you want?

Otherwise, you are stuck in a 1080 universe. Avid is not resolution independent, other than the new frame flex feature.

Export AAF from ProTools using Avid Compatibility mode.

Import AAF into Avid. Be sure to copy the media into the Avid MediaFiles/MXF/1.

There will probably be many tiny dummy clips called “Sample Accurate Edit”. Because ProTools can edit down to the sample and Avid only does frame based edits, they are necessary to maintain sync.
