Sounds like introduced more questions than I answered.

Some points…

If you have FC Studio installed, QuickTime Player 7 should detect it and unlock Quicktime Pro. You can check to see if you have Pro enabled by seeing if “Export” is greyed out. If it is, Pro is not enabled. I think without Pro, you also don’t get to change anything in the Properties Pane. If you can, then maybe you do have Pro. Its been awhile since I have had to unlock Pro features on my system.

It appears that the image is not really cropped. The player you use for Quicktime crops it by default, but its non destructive.

Of course, no other Quicktime Players respect this setting….including Quicktime Player X. I believe it is possible to set this bit in a web embedded QT movie, but have not tried it. QuickTime Player X has much diminished functionality than QuickTime 7, so much so that Apple continued to recommend installing QT7 to all FCP users.

In short, its a limitation with Quicktime that Apple feels is a feature. If you can’t live with it, you are going to have to export to something other than a Quicktime movie.

Not sure, but this may apply to you…

Basically, FCP assigns a timebase to items that don’t have one when you import them. This timebase is the DEFAULT setting your system is set to when you import….not necessarily, what your system is set to NOW.

See my post below about the QuickTime Pro aperture setting. In my limited tests, it seems to work. Weird that Apple buries that setting and doesn’t offer it at all in Quicktime X.

You need Quicktime Pro to do this. Not an option in QuickTime X’s player.

If you have access to FCP7, its on the install disk. You get QTPro for free with an FCP7 install. It installs the Quicktime Player for v7 in your Utilities folder (look there, you may have it and not know). Even though its quite old, it still works just fine in Mavericks.

In Quicktime Pro, open the movie, then select “Show Movie Properties” from the Window Menu.

In the Properties window, select the movie itself (not the video track, then go to the Presentation Pane.

Click “Conform aperture to:” select Production from the drop down menu.

See if that helps.

Try re-exporting the AAF from Avid, but this time check “Use AAF edit protocol”

Definitely get specs from the broadcaster. Some will take Pro Res or Avid DNX. Others may want XDCAM HD. Some may want it in an MXF container and not a Quicktime container. Some may want an AS-11 file. There is not a one size fits all solution here. Get it in writing.

As far as DVD capability, Avid bundles with Sorenson Squeeze, if you bothered to install it (some people don’t). With your sequence open, just go to File/Export, then select the preset Sorenson Squeeze-Encode for DVD. This creates a reference movie and audio wave file, but unfortunately, it won’t automatically launch and import into Squeeze. Manually launch Squeeze, drag the reference movie and wave file you exported into the main window, then select the DVD_Disc_Burn preset of your choice from Workflow/Disc/Elementary Streams, then click Apply. It will encode, ask you to insert a disc, then burn you a DVD. The PC version of Avid, also bundles with AvidDVD..which is somewhat similar to DVD Studio Pro, but it sounds like you aren’t interested in menus and other authoring options…just a quick disc.

The above assumes you have a recent version of Avid and have installed Sorenson Squeeze 8, which is bundled with Media Composer.

Sounds like the folder your settings are in has incorrect permissions, so you don’t have write access.

That would be the first thing I’d check.

I believe all the Avid related codecs are installed when you install Avid. You should not need to re-install them.

If it’s a non-Avid codec that you think is missing and you are on a Mac, you may want to try to enable legacy codecs in QuickTime using the terminal.
