  • Basic question: How do I import and re-link an aaf?

Posted by Aaron Neitz on March 31, 2014 at 9:31 pm

I’m a flame artist struggling with an aaf that won’t import into Flame.

I’m first trying to see the edit in MC7 on Mac. I have a USB drive from the editorial with a master folder of the project, within are an aaf file and a “Avid Media Files” folder with all the mxf media. I can import the aaf and get a bin with all the clips “offline” but how do I get Avid to connect the edit to the mxf files?

We’ve had problems with aaf before. What I’ve done in the past is import the aaf into MC7, find a delete the ramped timewarps, then rexport. Flame has no problem reading and reconnecting to the mxf. This time something else is wrong. BTW I’ve been googling for 4 hours and an still stymied on this reconnecting mxf issue.

For Avid to see the media, they need to be located on a root level of a drive, in a folder called “Avid MediaFiles” (exact name and caps needed), and then in that, an “MXF” folder, and then in that, numbered folders containing the MXF files.

Thanks Shane. I moved the files on the drive to reflect that structure and it worked.

Now to figure out where the pesky bug is.

Try re-exporting the AAF from Avid, but this time check “Use AAF edit protocol”

    Hi Shane!

You always have the answer. Thanks. Do you know if any of the Media Composer 2018 User Guides has this information. And if so, in which chapter?

    Best,

I’ve never been able to get a clear response from Avid as to what differences to expect between Edit Protocol being checked or not. I did find through some trial and error that custom column metadata on source clips was not exported when Edit Protocol was checked.
