DSLR – Zoom H4N sound out of sync
Hi,
I have a major problem, I have been shooting a documentary for 18 months (still shooting)
I have 60 hours of synced DSLR material and sound recorded on a ZOOM H4N.
But yesterday I moved all my material to a larger Drive, and now all my sequences are out of sync (Drifting) And also the new material shot yesterday is out of sync.
Somebody please help, I am going insane:-(

Please tell me you converted all those hours of DSLR footage to ProRes before bringing it into FCP. Because if not, then you have encountered one of the biggest issues of trying to edit H.264 native in FCP…loss of sync. FCP isn’t designed to edit H.264.

Hi Shane,
I’ve converted all my material to ProRes422 and I’ve been editing for 12 months without any sync problems. But suddenly it’s all out of sync (not moved out of sync in timeline)
I’ve been editing in FCP for 14 years, and I would say that I know my way around video and audio.
But this one I can’t figure out…Can you help me?:-)

So if you have the smaller drive connected, it’s in sync, but the larger drive, it drifts? Have you tried the smaller drive again to see if sync remains?
I might suggest trashing preferences…but I’d like to see what happens if you connect the smaller drive first.
How is the larger drive formatted?

Hi Shane.
It’s driving me insane.
It’s the same on the small drive.
Both drives are formatted: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
What can the problem be?

SO it worked…but then stopped when you transferred to another drive, and now is out of sync no matter what.
OK, trash your preferences, and see if that clears it up.

Hi Shane,
Still not working, I trashed both: com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist and Final Cut Pro User Data.
It didn’t work.
I uninstalled Final Cut 7 and installed it, didn’t help.
It didn’t do the job.
Do you have any other ideas?

Not sure, but this may apply to you…
Basically, FCP assigns a timebase to items that don’t have one when you import them. This timebase is the DEFAULT setting your system is set to when you import….not necessarily, what your system is set to NOW.
