[Danny Hays] “Log and capture”,? Like from a tape in an HDV camera?”
Its been strongly suggested that the forthcoming FCP-X no longer has any tape based functionality. No capture tool from tape, no edit to tape. Only file based ingest built in. You want to work with tape, you need Media Express from Blackmagic or whatever your card vendor (AJA, Matrox, etc.) provides.

Why don’t you just set bars and tone just the way you like them, then export as a Quicktime (self contained/same as source)…then re-import.

[Rick Peters] “I have converted them with MPEG Streamclip to MOV files, 1280X720, 59.94 FPS, Apple Motion JPEG A, 48kHz 16-bit audio. Each play okay on their own in FCP.”
Motion JPEG A is NOT a realtime codec in FCP. You can play this codec but you will have no support using Apples RT engine. This will cause you to not have any RT effects and will not allow multiclip playback(which is really like a complex PIP effect)
Convert the original files to Apple ProRes 422 or LT and you should be fine.

If you intend to do “Ken burns” style moves… I typically make the stills double the size of the video frame.
As Dave said, FCP is a little clunky for this on it’s own. Motion is great ( as is AE).
Noise Industries has a nice free plug in for this on their website.

[Ron Pestes] “Then I let it render “
Now its playing the render file and not the clip. Select all the clips that got rendered and toggle control-B. This will disable and re-enable the clip, thus causing everything to unrender.
You will want to disable auto rendering when using multiclip, as FCP considers this an effect.

My guess is it will release simultaneously with FCP X… replacing built in Log and Capture in Final Cut Pro.

You guys are working on a 4K RED project….don’t you think, at some point, you might want to have someone who does this for a living on this job…if only for a day…
Your director already made a big mistake. You need someone to guide both of you on finishing this before you make make bigger ones.

[John Pale] “Its not in Avid’s export dialog either”
Correcting myself… EDL isn’t in Avid’s export dialog…and you have to go further than just the menu to see OMF options…
Keep in mind also, that we have no idea what beta version these screen caps are from. Larry Jordan says he was told the beta version they used to demo at NAB was not the most current beta and much had been added .
Of course the whole thing could be a debacle…you may be right on every level.

[Simon Ubsdell] “t is pretty obvious there is no EDL support, no OMF support and no AAF support. As yet. “
Is it that obvious? You might very well be right…but keep in mind, just because its not in the Export Dialog doesn’t mean its not there. Its not in Avid’s export dialog either. Again…I don’t know jack until I actually launch the program, but neither do you.

[Hector berrebi] “actually, i think what got people ticked in that pic was not the grayed out “evil transcode” but the lack of XML in the import sub menu which looks like it became iMovie’s best buddy…
“Of course FCP 7 can already import iMovie projects (iMovie can export FCP XML’s), it just does so more obviously in X.
How do we know we even need to import XML files anymore? For all we know, the new project files ARE XML and you can just open XML files.
